Former many times president of the Senate, Amable Aristy Castro passed away after suffering a respiratory failure/ heart attack. He had just participated in the inauguration of the Marlin Shopping Center in Punta Cana. When he was taken to the Clinica Perozo in Higuey he was pronounced dead on Sunday, 4 December 2022. Aristy Castro is described as a chieftain of Higuey for the remarkable power and influence he wielded on his native province over his career in politics. He was 73 years old.
Aristy was a messenger at the Banco Popular in Higuey after which he began his career when entering the Partido Reformista in 1976. Six years later he won his first deputy seat in Congress. He would go on to be elected senator for La Altagracia province on seven occasions, and to preside the Senate on several occasions. He also served as chairman of the Dominican League of Municipalities.
He ran for President in 2008, coming in third place. His daughter was elected mayor of Higuey and served several terms.
Several media reports, including El Informe con Alicia Ortega, covered the long trail of corruption and impunity that also marked his life.
The mayor of Higuey called for seven days of mourning for Amable Aristy Castro. The mayor Rafael Baron Duluc had defeated Aristy Castro’s daughter, Karina, for the position.
