The GoldQuest Mining Corporation describes itself as a Canadian based mineral exploration and development company with projects in the Dominican Republic. GoldQuest is traded on the TSX‐V under the symbol GQC and in Frankfurt/Berlin with symbol M1W.
The company website reveals that the company only has carried out exploration projects to seek country licensing for exploration in the Dominican Republic. The company seeks government authorization for a major gold mining project in Romero in southwestern San Juan de la Maguana. The chief executive in the Dominican Republic is Luis Santana Pereyra.
Several environmental groups and community leaders oppose the project on grounds it would pollute the water sources so important for human consumption and farm irrigation. The mining company argues it will meet its water needs by using rainwater. The development would be carried out right in the basin of the San Juan River.
Meanwhile, last week the bishop of the diocese of San Juan de la Maguana, Monsignor Tomás Alejo Concepción spoke up in favor of the company carrying out an environmental and social impact study to determine the feasibility of exploiting the gold mine in El Romero in San Juan de la Maguana. Nevertheless, around 20 priests from the provinces of San Juan de la Maguana, Azua and Elías Piña have expressed their total opposition and warned President Luis Abinader about the harmful consequences the exploitation of the mine would have for health, biodiversity and farming in the area.

Monsignor Concepcion stated: “Logic dictates that if the scientific studies say that it cannot be done, then it cannot be done, even if the government says so and so says, even if whoever says so and so says it cannot be done. It is not a matter of so-and-so saying yes and so-and-so saying no, said the bishop when participating in a meeting between priests and members of the civil society of San Juan.”
The development would be carried out right in the basin of the San Juan River.
The Ministry of Energy and Mines has funded a public relations campaign to create a positive environment for mining investments.
