The Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD) chose its president, Miguel Vargas Maldonado as the party’s presidential candidate in the 2024 election. The party announced it would officially proclaim the candidacy during a National Convention on 5 November 2023.
Miguel Vargas Maldonado had been heading a would-be coalition of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD), presided by former President Danilo Medina and the People’s Force of former President Leonel Fernandez. Fernandez seeks to return to power in 2024; the PLD has named Santiago Mayor Abel Martinez its presidential candidate. Neither Medina nor Fernandez attended the announcement of the coalition by Vargas Maldonado in August 2023.
For years, the PRD had been an ally of the PLD, with Vargas Maldonado serving as Minister of Foreign Relations in the last government of Danilo Medina.
The PRD participated in the 2020 election as an ally with the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD). The PRD contributed 88,147 votes or 2.41%, according to the final bulletin the Central Electoral Board issued on the 2020 presidential election.
