
The traditional Haitian practice of slash and burn is resulting in the spreading of forest fires in the Los Haitises National Park. The protected area is a prime water source for the Dominican Republic.
Diario Libre reports on forest fires tackled by the National Environmental Protection Service (Senpa). Dozens of farmers of Haitian origin were arrested within the protected area for violating Environment Law 64-00.
The Ministry of Environment reported that 52 people were arrested in Los Haitises in January 2024.
