Quinta Dominica, a cultural house located in Colonial City 16th Century historic edifice, is hosting participatory art by Swiss photographer Cedric Bregnard. The exhibit is open to the general public as the Quinta Dominica celebrates its 20th anniversary.
Speaking on 10 April 2024 on the occasion of the Quinta Dominica 20th anniversary, founder Renaud Anselin of the Anselin-Barletta family explained the participatory art event is “a creative experience so all can connect to nature.” He spoke of the 20 years of activities at the cultural space to educate and foster encounters. He highlighted the Quinta Dominica is a space with events held to open people’s minds and bring positive changes to the community.
The work by Cedric Bregnard in Santo Domingo at the Quinta Dominica is a photograph-turned art of a giant “ceiba” from Tamboril, Santiago. The Tamboril ceiba is considered the oldest living tree in the Dominican Republic and has been declared a National Monument. The tree is now immortalized by the Swiss photographer.
Bregnard started his tree series as an individual photographic project to immortalize majestic ages-old trees in Switzerland. The project then went international and Bregnard has been traveling around the world to share his participatory art, a way to connect with nature. The work in Santo Domingo is the first of the Swiss artist in the Americas.
The immense fresco is printed in halftones and covers an area of three by four meters. Using black brush pens and black ink, the participants are accompanied to add more contrast to the image of the tree. The intention is that the overall volume of the tree is gradually made visible by playing with the contrast between light and shadow.
The approach to making art engages public participation in the creative process, letting people become co-authors, editors, while at the same time, observers of the work. This type of art is incomplete without viewers’ physical interaction. People are invited to find their own roots through the gesture of drawing. No special drawing or painting skills are required,
The Quinta Dominica is open 9:30am to 6pm on Padre Billini street, next to the Convento de los Dominicos.
