US$20 million assigned to Haitian security force

On the diplomatic front, the Dominican Republic has formalized a US$20 million contribution to the UN-led mission to suppress gang violence in Haiti. The funds will be delivered in two tranches, emphasizing the DR’s commitment to border stability.

In a formal diplomatic move in New York, Foreign Minister Roberto Alvarez officially notified the United Nations of the Dominican Republic’s financial commitment to the Trust Fund supporting the Gang Suppression Force (GSF) in Haiti. The contribution marks a significant escalation in regional involvement to stabilize the neighboring nation, the Ministry of Foreign Relations announced in a press release.

The Dominican government’s US$20 million commitment will be delivered over the next two fiscal years:
2026: An initial contribution of US$10 million to be channeled directly into the Trust Fund.
2027: A subsequent pledge of US$10 million to ensure the continuity of international security operations.

The official communication was delivered personally by Minister Alvarez to Atul Khare, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Operational Support. During the meeting, which included Ambassador Wellington Bencosme, the Dominican permanent representative to the UN, Alvarez emphasized that the administration of President Luis Abinader views a stable Haiti as a “strategic priority” for both the Dominican Republic and the wider Caribbean region.

Under-Secretary-General Khare expressed appreciation for the leadership shown by the Dominican Republic, noting that these verifiable financial contributions are essential for the UN Security Council to fulfill its mandate in addressing the ongoing Haitian security crisis.
