Local and foreign tourists are rediscovering Santo Domingo’s Malecon, the 14-km Caribbean Sea-bordering road, with sports events and even weddings now taking place. The capital city government has been renovating sections of the Malecon, making it more attractive to visitors.
Coming up is the 5K Night Run on 23 May 2026. Scheduled to begin at 7:30pm, the event invites runners to navigate a course along the Caribbean Sea, taking advantage of the improved lighting and wide pedestrian paths that characterize the new Malecón Deportivo section. Registration for the event is currently open with a starting cost of RD$1,695.00, marking it as a key fixture in the city’s growing sports tourism calendar.
Beyond its athletic utility, the aesthetic transformation of the Malecón is attracting high-profile social events, N Digital reports. Recently, the area served as the unconventional yet picturesque setting for a seaside wedding, underscoring the shift in public perception of the space. What was once primarily a thoroughfare for vehicles is now being utilized as a “perfect stage” for romance, with the sound of the waves and the modern landscaping of the Paseo Marítimo providing a natural, open-air venue that rivals traditional hotel settings.
For tourists, this evolution offers a safe, well-lit environment to experience the capital’s coastal beauty, while for locals, it provides a “backyard” capable of hosting everything from professional marathons to intimate celebrations.
