Hoy newspaper is reporting on its front page that the Central Bank of the Dominican Republic has paid out RD$18 billion to depositors of the now-defunct Banco Intercontinental (Baninter). According to Hoy, this is in addition to the RD$10 billion that the bank received from the Central Bank between September of 2002 and the beginning of April of 2003, under the guise of ?advances against lack of liquidity?. A source told Hoy that access to so much money was strange, since the deposits that Baninter had at the time were valued at RD$4 billion.
