The Boston Red Sox baseball team has announced that they will retire Pedro Martinez’s No. 45 on 28 July, just two days after the right-handed pitcher is enshrined in the baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York.
The ceremony will take place at Fenway Park before the Red Sox-White Sox game. The number 45 will be the ninth on the right field facade of Fenway Park.
Red Sox main owner, John Henry, said that the fact Pedro had been elected in the Hall of Fame in the first year he was eligible is a testament to the respect so many have for him. Martinez played for the Red Sox for seven seasons (1998-2004) and was a key part of the 2004 team that brought a World Series title to Boston for the first time since 1918.
