A Police investigation is underway into a robbery of a Banco BHD Leon Puerto Plata city branch on Tuesday, 3 May 2016. According to initial reports, the robbers stole RD$5.5 million and US$43,500 in cash. More than 11 people have been interrogated in the investigations as of yesterday, Wednesday 4 May 2016 and the investigation has branched out to the cities of Cotui and San Francisco de Macoris.
According to eyewitnesses, the robbers arrived in watchmen’s uniforms and replaced the watchmen on duty. Two of the three robbers entered the bank posing as values transport staff. The third remained outside in an unidentified vehicle, said to be a black SUV.
The robbery occurred around 4pm at the main branch of the BHD Leon bank on Calle Profesor Juan Bosch (former JFK) at the intersection with Calle San Felipe. The robbers disarmed the watchman on duty in the bank and threatened the customers. No one was injured.
