The Junta Central Electoral, the government organization in charge of organizing the presidential election in 2000, extended the deadline for requesting the new identification and voting voting card 30 days. The new deadline is now 31 January.

A report in Hoy newspaper indicates that 2000, there will be 8.5 million residents, not including the approximately 500,000 million illegal undocumented Haitians. Projections are that the DR will have 11.2 million inhabitants by 2025.
