President-elect Hipólito Mejía announce he has appointed as his next Minister of Industry and Commerce, Angel Lockward. Lockward is a former Lomé IV coordinator. He is a well known Reformista politician.

President-elect Hipólito Mejía will meet in Caracas with President Hugo Chavez. Mejía seeks to reinstate a US$25 million line of credit for the purchase of asphalt. He also seeks to use US$88 million for the construction of energy, transport and sports infrastructure projects.

The 23 Cuban coaches hired in 1997 to prepare the nation’s top athletes left yesterday. There had been talk their contracts would be renewed through December, but this did not occur.
