Former President Juan Bosch continues in critical condition at the Abel Gonzalez Medical Center. His doctors say he is doing better than yesterday after the operation on his lung was carried out to improve his breathing. 92-year-old Bosch is a former president who founded both the ruling PRD party and the PLD party.

School starts nationwide on Monday, 3 September. The Ministry of Education says 2,337,920 students have enrolled in elementary and high school. This is broken down into 1,831,289 in the public school system and 461,936 in private schools. El Siglo newspaper reports that the Ministry says 100,00 new students have registered.
