Porsche driver says he was wrong in speeding off

The owner of the Porsche that last Saturday almost ran over a traffic cop is a car dealer owner in eastern Santo Domingo. Luis Johann Nieto Ramirez says he has been in the business for 17 years.

On Saturday, 4 September 2021, he was captured on video evading speaking with a traffic cop who had ordered him to stop. He refused to lower his window. He now has charges against him for attempted homicide.

In an interview with Mañanero TV his lawyer says his client should not be charged with attempted homicide. Lawyer Soriano says at most his client should be accused of “fearless driving,” (manejo temerario). The fine for this is two to five public official minimum wages fine.

Nieto Ramirez says there was no attempt at homicide, as he has been charged in the Prosecutor Office. The lawyer Manuel Soriano says no charges have been placed against his client as of yet. The vehicle was voluntarily turned in to the Digesett for the investigation. The investigation could include viewing the street cameras for more details. The lawyer has deposited his client’s version of what happened.

Nieto Ramirez says the short video did not capture all that happened late at night on Saturday, 4 September 2021 at the intersection of Abraham Lincoln and Max Henriquez Ureña. The video shows the driver of a yellow Porsche stepping on the gas and how the Police agent has to quickly move aside to avoid getting run over. Nieto Ramirez said he waited for the green light to speed off. He said he sped off because he did not trust the Digesett agents.

The scene went viral on Saturday when it was uploaded by the person who just happened to be at the scene and on had videotapped the happening.

The actual reason why the Digesett stopped the Porsch is not known. Initially it was reported, the vehicle did not have a license plate. But a check of the video shows that it had a license plate, so this could not have been the reason.

“I am sorry for what happened. I do not want to affect anyone in society, because he was doing his job,” said Nieto in his defense during the radio talk show. He argued he waited for the red light to change to green, before speeding off.

In August, a person driving a McLaren rammed a Suzuki vehicle on the same Av. Abraham Lincoln and the person had to be hospitalized for weeks to recover.
