What to Do During an Earthquake

Stay as safe as possible during an earthquake. Be aware that some earthquakes are actually foreshocks and a larger earthquake might occur. Minimize your movements to a few steps to a nearby safe place and stay indoors until the shaking has stopped and you are sure exiting is safe.
If indoors

* DROP to the ground; take COVER by getting under a sturdy table or other piece of furniture; and HOLD ON on until the shaking stops. If there isn?t a table or desk near you, cover your face and head with your arms and crouch in an inside corner of the building.
* Stay away from glass, windows, outside doors and walls, and anything that could fall, such as lighting fixtures or furniture.
* Stay in bed if you are there when the earthquake strikes. Hold on and protect your head with a pillow, unless you are under a heavy light fixture that could fall. In that case, move to the nearest safe place.
* Use a doorway for shelter only if it is in close proximity to you and if you know it is a strongly supported, loadbearing doorway.
* Stay inside until shaking stops and it is safe to go outside. Research has shown that most injuries occur when people inside buildings attempt to move to a different location inside the building or try to leave.
* Be aware that the electricity may go out or the sprinkler systems or fire alarms may turn on.
* DO NOT use the elevators.

If outdoors

* Stay there.
* Move away from buildings, streetlights, and utility wires.
* Once in the open, stay there until the shaking stops. The greatest danger exists directly outside buildings, at exits, and alongside exterior walls. Many of the 120 fatalities from the 1933 Long Beach earthquake occurred when people ran outside of buildings only to be killed by falling debris from collapsing walls. Ground movement during an earthquake is seldom the direct cause of death or injury. Most earthquake-related casualties result from collapsing walls, flying glass, and falling objects.

If in a moving vehicle

* Stop as quickly as safety permits and stay in the vehicle. Avoid stopping near or under buildings, trees, overpasses, and utility wires.
* Proceed cautiously once the earthquake has stopped. Avoid roads, bridges, or ramps that might have been damaged by the earthquake.

If trapped under debris

* Do not light a match.
* Do not move about or kick up dust.
* Cover your mouth with a handkerchief or clothing.
* Tap on a pipe or wall so rescuers can locate you. Use a whistle if one is available. Shout only as a last resort. Shouting can cause you to inhale dangerous amounts of dust.

CNN weather gurus are saying that enough time has elapsed to indicate that the 7.0 quake was the main quake and not a fore-quake.

However,more aftershocks are very possible

Reports of damages to streets in San Juan de la Maguana. Haven't heard of any other damages in the DR. Reports of significant damages in Port au Prince.

wow totally the opposite of what all my agents did..24 agents ran out the door and made a hurtle in the middle of the plaza..thank god nothing bad happen when people where panicking.....lets just hope that those near the ocean dont tkae the warning lightly and take necessary steps to prevent bad news form hitting the local news papers today.. if we have tsunami warning please stay away from ocean

Poor Hatian Ambassador, CNN asked him if he's been in contactwith the US State Dept to ask for help.... Guy said NOT YET, too many news organisations are on the phone with him , he hasn't been able to talk to the state dept. yet.

He made an appeal for help thru CNN....

Frank Williams is talking on CNN and said that it was reported to him that the National Palace of Haiti is severly damaged, and he hears many people screaming.

This could just be the worst disaster in a long time. No country deserves an earthquake, but Haiti doesn't need this!

They were finally getting their economy growing again, mostly in Port-au-Prince and this shyte happens!

WTF?

Please all what ever you will do just keep calm and make no big seems us Dominican tend to be a little melodramatic and will make an outrage.. lets give thanks to god nothing big has happen so far...
Lets just pray and keep our love ones safe out of the ocean front.


I do not think that you are at all melodramatic about the weather here... last year when there was a force 5 hurricane off shore, bigger than Katrina, I was the only one running around the supermarket buying milk, etc... everyone else was just going on about their day. In the States the shelves would have been EMPTY!

There have been lots of reports of the authorities not even being able to move people away from the river banks when a flood is expected because they do not want to leave their stuff.

It doesn't sound good for sure. There's probably very little communication in and around PAP...things could be much worse than we think...I hope not, but such a strong earthquake in such a densely populated un-prepared area doesn't bode well.

Here a minor tremor, lasted for about 10 seconds.
I was sitting on the floor adjusting the TV and thought I was getting dissy, the floor was moving and then I looked up and saw the lights swinning slightly and it hit me...an earth quake.
None of the dogs barked, a few went to the front door a bit confused.

I cannot get BBC or CNN on my TV so I tune in on this topic for further news and my thoughts go out for the people in Ha?ti.

It says "2337 Z" for 2337 ZULU which means 23:37 Greenwich time = 7:37pm Santo domingo

and 7:04 pm for Puerto Plata

or later, IF it comes
