Julian Javier - Born in town of San Francisco de Macoris - joined St Louis Cardinals in 1960

Julian Javier

The Dominican Javier was dealt from the Pirate farm system to the Cardinals in a May 1960 trade for popular pitcher Vinegar Bend Mizell. His range and speed quickly enabled him to establish himself as the everyday second baseman for a dozen seasons in St. Louis. In 1963, Javier and teammates Ken Boyer, Dick Groat, and Bill White made up an all-Cardinal starting All-Star infield. Javier was so good covering ground, pivoting on the double plays, and going back for pop-ups that GM Bing Devine proclaimed him better defensively than Frankie Frisch, Rogers Hornsby, or Red Schoendienst.

Javier hit .360 in the 1967 WS against Boston, including a three-run homer in Game Seven to help Bob Gibson win his third Series game and bring the World Championship to St. Louis. He is the father of Stan Javier. (FJO)

Actor Manny Perez

Rough-hewn Dominican-American actor Manny Perez fit the bill in Hollywood for Hispanic characterizations -- particularly those of thugs and hoods -- and thus tackled many parts that traded on his ethnicity, to such a degree that he soon chalked up dozens of Latino roles in many genres. Key projects included the Gulf War drama Courage Under Fire (1996), the inner-city drama Washington Heights (2002, which Perez starred in and produced), and the musical Yellow (2006). At the same time, Perez evinced versatility and flexibility that stretched him beyond Hollywood confines; for instance, he was one of the only non-Japanese actors in the ultraviolent 2000 crime picture Brother, helmed by and starring "Beat" Takeshi Kitano, and also played Johnny in the controversial 2003 independent film Party Monster, about the bizarre life and downfall of flamboyant New York City club promoter Michael Alig (Macaulay Culkin). In 2007, Perez starred opposite Wanda De Jesus in the Mafia-themed crime thriller Illegal Tender, directed by Franc Reyes. ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide

Actor Victor Rasuk

In a role that seemed tailor-made for him thanks to the Dominican-American ties between the character and actor, thespian Victor Rasuk arrived onscreen sounding a graceful, soulful, and multilayered note, with a stunning lead portrayal in the coming-of-age romance Raising Victor Vargas (2002). As directed by Peter Sollett (Five Feet High and Rising), this sweet, finely-observed fable told of a young man's successful attempts to court a local Hispanic beauty -- and the lessons learned by each over the course of their relationship -- won the hearts of critics and audiences around the world. Unsurprisingly, this project foreshadowed the career accomplishments that lay ahead for Rasuk, on two levels: he consistently received respectable billing and consistently chose interesting, unpredictable work. His resum? through the late 2000s includes supporting roles in such pictures as Lords of Dogtown (2005), I'm Reed Fish (2006), and Adrift in Manhattan (2007). ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide
