PRESS RELEASE
January 14, 2010

Disaster Relief Effort in Haiti
What you can do to help
Cabarete, Dominican Republic - January 14, 2010

The DREAM Project is mobilizing support to reach those affected by the devastating earthquake in Haiti this past Tuesday. We are coordinating with USAID and Dominican Crossroads Foundation to organize and transport supplies and food to Port-au-Prince. If you live in the Dominican Republic and would like to help, we are accepting food and supply donations in the DREAM Office, located in Plaza del Patio in the center of Cabarete, or in the DREAM Center, located in the Callejon de la Loma next to the Colonia Nueva School.

Needed Supplies:
Water
Condensed milk
Cans of food (easily prepared): Sardines, Cooked Beans, Tuna
Salami
Peanut Butter
Dark Chocolate
Nuts (unshelled)
Dried Fruit
Crackers
Honey
Granola Bars
Trail Mix

Medical Supplies:
Tarpaulins
Water containers
Water-purification tablets
Oral re-hydration sachets

Additionally, on Thursday, January 21st, DREAM will be holding a Community Pulga in the DREAM Center in the morning and a DREAM Art Show in Plaza el Patio in the afternoon to raise funds to support the transport of supplies and food to Port-au-Prince. In addition, we will be having a DREAM Valentine Dinner fundraiser on February 13th to support long-term relief efforts for Haiti. Because many of our community and staff are Haitian or of Haitian descent, we will be providing long-term support after this critical relief stage is complete. Please drop off pulga donations in the office or DREAM Center by Wednesday, January 20th. We thank you in advance for working with the DREAM Project to do what we can to help the victims of the Port-au-Prince earthquake.

If you are outside of the Dominican Republic, the most effective way for you to contribute is to make a monetary donation to the Red Cross. This is one of the few organizations on the ground that has the resources to make an immediate impact. We also recommend donating to the Batey Relief Alliance at http://bit.ly/7e6wyU.
The Dominican Republic Education And Mentoring (DREAM) Project is a US 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that provides quality education for children born into poverty in rural areas and small communities of the Dominican Republic by combining volunteerism, international awareness and community involvement into a sustainable support system.

A friend who worked in Haiti for a number of years and just left last spring recommends the following organizations for financial donations, based on her observations of the NGO climate in Haiti. (These are just her observations, by not mentioning an NGO she does not mean to disparage other organizations.) She considered length of time in Haiti, working through local partners, Haitian staff in senior positions of the organization and financial responsibility of the organization.

Catholic Relief Services
(The CRS office in the DR was the staging ground for the organization's initial relief efforts to Haiti. They chartered a bus with staff and supplies and made it there this morning.)

There are a number of collection points in Puerto Plata: TV Circuito Musa (near Plaza Independencia, formerly Parque Central) has a container for tinned food, water and medicines. They organised a TV & radiomarathon last night & raised RD$744,000 in cash as well as items brought for the container. There is also a container at the Civil Defence HQ on what used to be called Avenida Colon & is now Avenida Camaa?o. These containers will be transported to Jimani to the DR help centre there.

On Sunday the Catholic Church is organising a 12 hour TV-radiomarathon and I understand that items can be dropped off at the Cathedral. 809-586-2484.

The more I read about the survivors in Haiti the more I realize how little I really understand. The reports of injury, the inability to treat them, the triage of foregoing care for people that likely won't survive or not treating those with severe injuries but not in imminent danger of death is just staggering. I read of injured that would take "An entire trauma team" in a developed country to treat and see they simply pass them by as there is not the resources to help. I guess you would need to be a medical professional in the middle of Haiti to completely understand the tragedy now and to come

So sad and nothing to do but make a monetary donation and pray.

The more I read about "Armed church groups" headed for PAP the more I realize there are going to be many flashpoints and riots, it is truly best to donate money and let the professionals deal with this, the chaos from well meaning "volunteers" is already causing more problems than help, send money please

This is a "sanitized" NBC report, fit for prime time but it will still make you cry.

US Coast Guard COOKS performing surgery on mans face, computer techs giving injections, ripping ceiling tiles from the overhead of a Coast Guard Cutter to make splints, I think some of the reports coming out are understating just how bad the situation is
