WOW! lots of good answers here. I'm checking out all the playas listed one by one. Someone asked where we're coming from - it's the UK. We'll probably land in Punta Cana.

Of those beaches mentioned, partic. on Samana peninsula, are there many with beach-side huts, or accommodation in general? Like, wake up and have a swim in the ocean/sea before breakfast:)?

Sosua can actually be quite nice. When living in Charamicos
I would walk down to the beach in the mornings. With my
feet in the sand on calm day from around 7am until 9am, many
a morning I'd have the entire beach to myself. Always enjoyed
swimming out to the rocks and back a few times then head home,
shower up and walk in to town for a proper breakfast.

In the Las Terrenas area you can get accommodation including budget(not huts) on Playa Popi and Playa Las Ballenas (other side of road) and on Playa Bonita (across footpath) and directly onto beach at Playa Coson. Lived on Bonita and Ballenas and did just what you mentioned...up early and walk beach and swim whereas for Coson lived up in hills and drove down for that early dip. Also there is budget accommodation direct onto some beaches in Las Galeras beaches with plenty of budget accommodation nearby but not Rincon (which I personally think is overrated as a beach venue and less inviting albeit it is a picture opportunity).

Samana has such variation in it's abundance of beaches, and for someone from Europe it should suit what you want......Brit here.

DO NOT fly into Punta Cana Airport if you are planning on staying on the Samana Peninsula. You are many hours away and getting there would be a hassle. Check out flights into AZS, Juan Bosch, El Catey International Airport. This airport is located approximately 30 minutes from Las Terrenas.

Many, many thanks to everyone here who took the time to reply - super useful!

Guys one more question please... Samana peninsula is where 90% of people on here recommend I go. Either Las Terrenas or Las Galeras seem to be the places most frequently recommended.

It is the north coast though, and the Atlantic. Not that I would ever want to spend a week in Punta Cana, surrounded by all-inclusive resorts; but the beaches there are indeed postcard-perfect. Shallow, turquoise water - it's probably what the water was in Playa del Carmen in Mexico, warm and shimmering. Fine, white sand, and lots of it - wide beaches.

Will those places mentioned in this thread: Playa Coson, Playa Bonita, Playa Rincon, etc - be like that?

Technically speaking the Caribbean begins at the southeast corner of the island, below Punta Cana's beautiful beaches. I wouldn't let the fact that it's in the Atlantic deter you, there are plenty of nice beaches on the Atlantic Ocean. For me I would base myself on Playa Las Ballenas, wake every morning to a nice swim and then explaore some nearby beaches during the day. Even better may be splitting time between either Coson, LT or Las Galeras.

In Las Terrenas, Playa Ballenas normally has very calm water. It is surrounded by an offshore reef. Playa Bonita and Playa Coson have more wave action. I would consider staying at Hotel Alisei or Hotel Colibri. Both hotels are right on the beach. Las Terrenas is busier than Las Galeras but you have a much better choice of restaurants and activities.

Two weeks ago I was diving both sides: Atlantic 28 degree Celsius in Las Terrenas, Caribbean 29 degree in Boca Chica and Bayahibe.

Pls tell me exactly where Rincon is....if you will

Going from Las Galeras towards Samana there is a turn off to your right about 15-20 minutes from Las Galeras. It is easy to pass it, good to ask someone. You will take that road until you hit a small town, there you turn right and continue all the way directly to Playa Rincon.

That is the best I can give as far as directions.

SKY, can I assist?

We now have a brand new Texaco gas station. Coming from Samana it is about 3 miles before Las Galeras. Just a very short distance after the gas station, make a LEFT. There are a few signs there for Rincon. Go about 10-15 minutes. It was fixed and paved a few years ago, so it is in great condition. However, take your time because there are a lot of sharp turns. As you come to the top of a hill, you will have a great view of Rincon on your right. At the bottom of that hill is a very small town. At that intersection make a right and go out a dirt road for about one mile. This is the only rough part of the road, but if you take your time, you will make it.

Once you reach the beach you can go right or left. At the end of each are places to eat. To the left is a fresh water small river that you can tour by a very small boat. If you go to the right, it is more scenic with more place to eat and beach chairs for rent.

Have fun!

I’m not sure, your link is in your post, but I’ve had trouble seeing your Vimeo videos before.  Maybe upload them to YouTube?
The videos work on other vBulletin forums. They have worked here for years.

YouTube compresses HD videos too much, even a paid account. That's why I use Vimeo for best presentation.

Here is the link of our Playa Rincon video: https://vimeo.com/84250541

Good directions. I would recommend going to the left when you hit the beach. Go to the end where the river is on your left and the ocean to the right. I don't know if she is still in operation, but there was no one that had better fresh fish than the Fat Lady in the blue tent near the river.

The wind and waves can be intense there. Go right and the beach is much, much more mellow, and there are two restaurants that are very good.

MY video shows the east end. We alsways stop at the west end to rinse off the salt water and sand in the river before we leave.
