To all Dominicans, rich and poor,it's all about "Image"!
They will sacrifice EVERYTHING,including a better life for their childreen, just to impess people they don't even know.
For the very poor, they wear expensive shoes, clothes, and have the latest "Blackberry" or "Iphone".
To those with some income, they will live in a poor "Barrio", and eat only "Espagetti" with some salami on special occasions, just to drive an "SUV".
I prefer to skimp on my vehicles, and spend everything on my kids.
Just so you know about the "Sexual" aspect of driving a great car,or SUV,they call those vehicles a "Baja Panti"!

i have always wondered why i have never seen anybody with high end stereo equipment in this country. i have seen it in Puerto Rico, as far back as 1988, and i blog on hi fi sites with people from all over Latin America, and the caribbean, even from The Turks and Caicos. never seen any interest from a Dominican. know why? you cannot take it on the street with you! you cannot impress others with it. what good is it, if nobody gets to ooh and ahh? that is why they will spend 200,000pesos to put a system into a car that is worth 150,000. they can then pull up to a crowd of bystanders, ignite the air with 150 decibels of cacophony, and say ?mine is bigger than yours?.

I think one of the reasons is that the attitude towards spending of Dominicans is completely different than a European and probably an American. You can see that the 15th and 30st of each month in the supermarkets...they are full and everybody is spending like crazy...cause there is money in the account.

Most europeans have a monthly budget of which they deduce a weekly budget, I knew that back in Holland I would spend 500 euros a month in the supermarket and that would be equally divided over the month....not double when money entered and not half at the end of the month. The same with vehicles...I knew my yearly income....I needed a trustworthy vehicle to bring me to my work and back everyday (250 kilometers), it doesnt need to be the cheapest and ugliest car I could find, but it should fir the purpose and that's it....and it should not eat more than a calculated part of my budget.

Let's say I save 50,000 euros in a few years....I would invest it in a house, my retirement or just leave it in a bank account.....the average dominican can not see 2,000,000 pesos in their account (and yes they exist ....and yes they can earn it doing honest business...es mas....in this country it is a LOT easier to make money than in developed countries like mine) they have to spend it....short planning horizon.....or just NOT THINKING....I see examples of people having a successful business, earning lots of money for years, spending all, not reserving for the 'skinny' years to come, business gets in trouble, have to take a serious loan with a mortgage on their installations, they get the loan, use half of it to fix part of the problems they are facing, the other half they use to buy yeepetas, flatscreens and make a cruise....this is a true story.

In my opinion that's the big problem many dominicans face....they see money ONLY as a means to consume.

The other extreme is what (north)europeans have been taught...they only see money as means to buy the necessary and save the rest for later...which means, for never, and give a big part to the government when you die, nice to have 100,000 euros on your bank account, which you never use while than you wont have 100,000 euros on your bank account anymore...

Im trying to live balanced and not save just to save and neither spend just to spend...but it s hard to change....I tend to only want to spend the necessary and tend to procrastinate any consumption I dont deem truly necessary....maybe dominicans just enjoy life more

True - different priorities and approach to life. I've told the story before of the friend of a friend who had no savings, was living in a rented house, and had three kids to support. When was let go from his job he used most or all his liquidaci?n money to buy a jeepeta.

Great Question !!! What Recession???

I am really amazed about the number of jeepetas in this country.
Jeepetas are premium cars, very expensive everywhere at any country.
How in a developing (just not to say third world) country there are so many premium cars?
Just an example, in Spain, where people earns 3, 4 times more than a dominican, they can only afford those jeepetas if they are mid-high class professionals.
It would be like if I would be in Barcelona for example and all roads were plenty of Porsche, Ferrari, Lamborgini ... no way, it would be ilogical situation, so ...

how this happens in this country? really curious about it ...

Just one of a long list of things that I cannot really understand from this country ....

Ruben,
You obviously have not been reading the posts of El Muy Estimado Ministro De Propaganda Pichardo.
The supposed recession of 2008 has been declared as a campaign of misinformation by subversive elements
and thus non existent.
Those identified had their pressurized drinking water and electricity cut as punishment.
We understand the financial difficulties of Spain and the 30% unemployment.

The economy of the DR is vibrant and growing rapidly.
If anyone needs proof, please note the superfluity of Jeepetas.

The longer I live here, the more i see the playboy wannabees. The guys spend all their money on either vehicles, pimping up their 150 cc motos or on a car stereo. The girls spend all their money on their hair and shoes. Both spend stupid money on getting the newest cell phone and spend all damn day texting or updating their facebook status. Most cannot afford any of this and live day to day.

My dad always told me that there are two types of people. Those who pretend to have money and live a flamboyant life and those who have money and live a modest life.

Gmen

In reality and contrary to the held beliefs of many experts here, Gmen prefer exotic or premium sedans over SUVs for their travels and baja-panty effect. They consider driving a Porsche Cayenne a queer's option.

.

Beeza,

I would like to clarify the remark of Ministro Pichardo.
The Cayenne comment is not directed at you.
Defamation of character is not intended in any way!

I have an uncle in DR. He used to live in a nice apartment with his 2 children, and wife. Through speaking with various family members, and other people I have gathered he makes roughly 75,000 USD a year. He obviously has told me he makes upwards of 100k, but in reality 75k is pretty much what he's earning a year give or take a couple G's. Now my uncle has two jeepetas, I know nothing about cars so all I know is the year on one is a 2009 something, and the other I think is a 2006 Honda Pilot.

A couple of months ago my mom mentioned to me how he had to start selling off most of his valuables, because business had been bad. I watched him take his kids out of the private school they were enrolled in, and place them in public schools. Sell his apartment, and move into a neighborhood that can best be described as a "quasi shanty town." His wife had to sell off most of her expensive jewelry. Yet he kept both SUV's. Keep in mind when I last talked to my mother about his debt she estimated that he was easily in $30,000 USD, and yet he was willing to change everything about his life but not give up his precious cars.

To him these cars are a symbol for his "wealth." Yet I'm pretty sure my broke college student ass who eats ramen noodles 6 nights a week because it's all I could afford has more "wealth" than he does. This is something that I'm sure MANY Dominican men have done, they have put their public image ahead of their families well being.

The car is one of the biggest misconception to wealth there is. If you want to tell how much money a man has or access to look at his WATCH if his watch is 12,000USD plus respect him. Anybody can pay a high interest car note means nothing. LOOK at the WATCH.

No offense JMB773........BUT....

You see a man of COLOR (which you seem to be stuck on by the way)

I see a COLORFUL MAN.....

BIG DIFFERENCE

You really gotta let it go man, it's just sooooo unattractive, you don't wanna go through life thinking the way you do.....

Remember, you can fix alot of things in this life of ours.....(Ignorance can be tweaked) BUT YOU CAN'T FIX STUPID......

Your fairly young....(I'm assuming?)......so you still got a shot.......(It's gonna take alot of hard work just to keep your head above water, but hey, it's better than where your at now) I hope it works out, I really do.........

Have a great night.....

I had a fake Breitling with a yellow face once. People definitely made assumptions based on that. It was pretty funny.
