[h=3]15 movies could be filmed in DR in 2012[/h]Ellis Perez, head of the newly created General Cinemas Department (DGCINE) is predicting that 2012 will be a record year for filming movies in the Dominican Republic. He said that 12 to 15 films could be filmed here, as producers seek to make the most of the newly passed General Cinema Law, as reported in Diario Libre.

He did not name the productions, but said that a combination of national and international films would be made here. He said this would be a leap from the present two to three films a year.

"I hope this doesn't sound like an exaggeration, especially because there've been only two or three films shot here per year and this will be a jump. For that same reason we feel this is a great challenge for us, because it's an added demand for personnel specialized in cinematography," he said.

Perez said that the main obstacle was the country's lack of skilled labor for working in the industry. He said his department is working to step up training in order to meet the demand. DGCINE has a budget of RD$125 million for 2012.

Ellis Perez said that at the end of 2011, movie actor/producer Andy Garcia filmed scenes for his new movie The Truth, directed by Damian Lee and with performances by Eva Longoria, Kim Coates and Forest Whitaker, the first international film made here under the new legislation. He said that the first domestic production would be "El Rey de Najayo" (The King of Najayo) by Fernando Baez.

Key Word: "COULD"!
Why not say 2,334 movies,"COULD" be made in 2012?
Any big budget Hollywood/International "movie" is years in pre-production and planning.

"Hey "Brad",ya wanna go to the DR next week and shoot some film?"
"No thanks "George". "Arnold" and "Tom" and I are going to have lunch at "Planet Hollywood" instead.
Why don't you ask "Andy" and "Vin",those loosers aren't doing anything worthwhile!

Update!

Pinewood studios pulled the plug on a new 100 acre set in the UK. The plan called to build a small city which was to have tenants with the agreement that they'll be used as extras and the locations for filming. The ambitious plan includes 1,400 homes and sixteen "streetscapes" for films.

The studio is now mulling to move the Hollywood challenger project to their under-construction Pinewood Indomina Studios project in Juan Dolio, Dominican Republic. Where, according to inside sources, there's ample cooperation and support from the local partners, all the way to the highest government officials.

Just skimmed thru this. The one thing that stood out in all the post was " CHEAP LABOR ". I know extras in the movie industry make 50 bucks a day but theses are trust fund wanna be actors or glory hounds. All others are paid scale. The Teamsters make sure everyone from drivers to set crew makes proper pay. What happens when Hollywood ( especially the Teamsters ) is caught doing a Boston Chinatown scene in the DR using 800 peso a day drivers and 500 peso set crews. Canada had to bow to pressure years ago and pay prevailing wages so will the pro union Hollywood liberals insist on the Dominican workers being paid prevailing wages.

I thought Hollywood was against the out sourcing of jobs over seas. Will the Mayor of Boston, New York, Chicago, L.A. ect.. be happy seeing his city on the big screne knowing his city made no money from it.

Are these studios going to be eco-friendly? Or are they just expanding the carbon foot-print by building what is already in existance. When, or if this studio ever gets finished hopefully the DR will get their taxes from the 10 million dollar a picture actors that will be making their salary in the DR. Or are they going to let the actors pull a Denzel Washington. This production has corruption written all over it...............

Also, where is the transparency in this studio deal. Seems the Dominican government has there sticky fingers in the bowl. When the Gov of New York makes deals with businesses including the movie industry there is full disclosure of what the deals are. That is why from day one the incoming Gov of R.I. said the Studio 38 deal was no good from the start.

Where is the money coming from for this project? Yeah, we know. The companies involved in the deal. But where is that money coming from? What kind of tax breaks and benefits are there once movies are being filmed. All i see is pictures. And press releases. How does this deal help the little guy Rubio is talking about. Who got the contracts to build this mess. No transparency at all.

The Law and tax breaks are PUBLIC and open to all to see!

The investment was an OPEN issue to the public and the two parts involved are $$$ well to do.

The benefits to the DR are clear as water, as people (as in locals) will get jobs in a previous non-existent sector of the industry. Taxes from actor's pay checks will be collected. Etc...

This is just one of three (3) studios to begin operating in the DR in the the next 2 years alone with direct investment and zero "0" public funds or subsidies of any kind.

Who gets to build the actual studios? That's info that only the owners of the project can say or care to disclose as they are NOT required to do so by DOMINICAN LAW!

But you only need to waltz by the site and pick the name of the builder from their equipment!

Yeah right! Just the same way the "Teamsters" made sure to have FTZ workers get paid the prevailing wages here, or the many other US franchise operations in the country as well?

You seem to be confusing one thing with the other! Canada and the USA are nothing more than a few consonant and vocals play. Hence why the cross border ease to pull force by unions...

Let them try that in the DR! LOL!!

The Indomina Pinewood Horizon Water Tank and Blue Screen is in full construction mode with inauguration scheduled the end of September.

While the
water tank is located just east of Juan Dolio, off the highway, the main studios will be situated very near Guavaberry Country Club.

Modular units are being fabricated
in England.

Once filming begins on larger projects, film executives have stated that (A) list
actors will commute between Juan Dolio and Casa de Campo by helicopter. Once filing projects begin there will be hundreds of personnel in and out of Juan Dolio each month who will require housing.
