So, it sounds like you could go all the way to LT and back in a pretty leisurely manner in about 2-3 hours. Sound about right?

That sounds about right. It's am amazing, visual ride with a kaleidescope of colors everywhere you look...and that's without any chemical help.:knockedou

lol. What do you think is the most scenic run you can do with some small engined motos in about 4-6 hours (including lunch) from Cabarete? Round trip, I mean.

There's a lot of different runs you could do:

1. Cabarete to playa grande, eat lobster on the beach, swim, make love, take a nap, then head back. there''s a private beach right past playa grande that i wrote about earlier in the weak. i would check that place out.

2. Cabarete to La Cumbre: eat lunch, hang out, and then head back. it's a stunning ride, with hundreds of curves!

3. If youre slightly an advanced rider, you can head from cabarete to charimicos, take a left at the bottom--where there is a small river and a motorcycle dealership, and lots of traffic coming from that left hand road. there you head south until you run into the river, cross it, then keeping heading south-east until you come up in Jamao Norte. that ride is amazing!!!!!! you feel like your doing drugs once you get past all the people and are out into deep, deep countryside with only the trees and breeze as your only companions.

4. Cabarete to Teleferico, but taking a left on a dirt road at the top of puerto plata--before you start descending down into puerto plata where there is the go cart track. You want to turn left at the top of that hill--that will take you the back way into puerto plata and you will meet a service road that comes up the back of Teleferico. take lots of pictures once you reach the top of teleferico, then head back the same way, or take a right to San Marcos and then come back through Puerto plata--driving through the city.

5. Cabarete to the Turistica highway. There, head up and over the mountain to Santiago. once you come over the mountain and are almost in the city, head to a cafe at the bottom of the Turistico highway--i think its called Campagnia's or something like that. hang out there, then come back the same way--over the mountain and watch the kaleidescope of invigorating colors and smells will intoxicate you and mesmorize you. take a girl with you. hell, take two girls with you!

145.) One of the most fun trails to ride in Bonao...but the red soil is like a bonding agent...it's impossible to wash off your clothes, bike, gums and teeth. it's like super glue, only stronger.
dominicanrepublic1019.jpg

146.) The red soil is like Bondo; once it dries, it permanently bonds material together for eternity. i like to use it as a sealing agent for my fillings in my mouth. I've never had a filling come loose.

147.) I once had this red clay/silly putty bond my toes together and hermetically seal my toes within a cocoon inside my shoes. it took two weeks and a chainsaw to break them free.

148.) some roads just demand knobby tires for grip

149.) To take care of those dirt roads...meet my little friend: 2002 Yamaha 250 YZ.

150.) Unbelievably, someone here on the North Coast owns a nearly new Honda Goldwing with Russian license plates on the back (they also have dominican license plates). They drive it frequently to Ocean Village which is where I always see it. It's beautiful, but it's as large as the house i grew up in.

151.) I took this picture 2 weeks ago while flying into SDQ. notice highway 5 on the right going to Samana, and the new Atlantic Coast highway on the left going to Las terrenas. Stunning drives!

152.) La Cumbre restaurant...a favorite stop for any motorcyclist...and for good reason--the view is amazing.

That's how to do it, the right tool for the job. I'll bet cavebiker would love to have had that on his Haitian border adventure...

There's a reason Goldwings are called "couches."

I made this video yesterday afternoon. It's from Moca to La Cumbre, 50 curves in 6:28, on a 2006 KTM 950SM. There are only two of these bikes on this island.

I propose this new traffic sign for the DR for where the pavement just stops...for no apparent reason:
