So the lesson is: do not go clubbing with black friends in DR.
hehehehe
Joking aside, I had a similar incident in santiago. I was with a black dominican friend and 2 white girls walking into Francifol cafe (about 7 yrs ago). We all got in but they stopped my friend at the door and gave him the "private party" routine. The door man didn't know he was with me because he was behind us. So I exchanged a few words with the door man and to my surprise, he was very adamant in his decision. No problem: I went inside and called the owner outside. My friend was let in because people knew me. In any case the incident left an embarrassing after-taste in my mouth and I could see my friend was not very comfortable either. We all left a bit earlier than anticipated. This was 7-8 yrs ago. Now santiago's economy is shattered and bars/restaurants are struggling to keep alive. I have a feeling, they will even let in shoe shine boys if anyone dared to walk in.

By the way, did I read somewhere the Tj's black friend had cornrows on his head? If this is the case then I guess we all know why he was refused entry.

I was able to get in touch with, and speak to, the general manager of the Hotel Napolitano today, Mr. Dal Moro. It was a cordial phone conversation of about 15 minutes concerning the incident with my black friend not being allowed entrance to the nightclub Mint.

According to Mr. Dal Moro, Mint has very strict entrance rules, especially in regards to attire. He also says that the club gets very crowded and patrons are denied access for this reason as well. He also comments that the phrase "private party" is used to kindly tell a patron they cannot enter without that patron getting upset.

Mr. Dal Moro denies Mint is a racist establishment and points to a recent promotional video that was done of the club where faces of all colors can be seen.

I appreciate Mr. Dal Moro taking out some time to discuss the incident. In the end, I still feel the same about my friend's denied access. As I had mentioned in an earlier post, I laid out the facts about what occurred that night and drew a personal conclusion. There were many comments, some 150 that followed, showing just how touchy this particular subject is. Many people posted and many people drew there own personal conclusions; just as Mr. Dal Moro.

No matter what your opinion is about this incident and many others that involve some type of racism in the DR, it's beneficial that we can discuss them: hear people out, draw conclusions and hopefully move forward in a positive way.

I also invited Mr. Dal Moro to post last in this thread with his own comments.

For me, opinions and feelings have not changed. At the very least, none of this was just swept under the rug.

So thats it man? Nothing more??????? You just take your lumps, walk down by the riverside kicking rocks singing Paul Anka songs acapella? Whats wrong with you man? You were a patron at HIS establishment, which YOU didnt have to be.

You come to my restaurant, you eat piece of fish, you get sick. Are you coming back? I doubt it. Why? Because it was a bad experience. Do I get the nice word of mouth? I doubt it because I had you on the toilet all night.

You go to a club with your team and half of them cant get in. You make a stink about it, you get an excuse rationalizing the behavior. And now what? Are you going to go in the kitchen with your head in your hands and make a big glass of Nestle Quik chocolate milk saying to yourself "It just aint fair"?

I dont get how this changes in any manner what I told you to do the 1st time. People will only go where they feel comfortable. I dont NEED to go MINT. As a matter of fact(actual fact), IT IS THE PEOPLE INSIDE THE PARTY THAT MAKE THE PARTY NOT THE PLACE.

Now santiago's economy is shattered and bars/restaurants are struggling to keep alive. I have a feeling, they will even let in shoe shine boys if anyone dared to walk in.

So uhmm....You gonna shut them down or mope? Times are hard on the boulevard. The consumer doesnt have to accept anything.

My friend does not have cornrows. That was a post that Robert made, I think, but I have no idea why.

In regards to my reaction, what reaction do you want me to have? My reaction is not to return to Mint, period. My friends and I were out again this past Saturday night and the word "Mint" popped up from another guy who was not with us two weeks ago. As you can imagine, that was kicked to the side. Less business for them.

My reaction was to write about my experience so others would know this is occurring at this particular club. Several posters say they will never go there either. Less business for them.

We are two different people. Your reaction will most likely be different than mine. I portrayed the fact that I was very upset when speaking with Mr. Dal Moro. I was given an apology but there was no offering to my friends and I to make up for the experience. I'm not going to get into a yelling match with the guy because that's not me.

I simply will not patronize Mint and that's my reaction.

There is a new club that is open in Melia Casino. It opens late (about 1 am) and is quite nice. I did see black people inside when I was in SD last week and visited this club.

There is also a new club opening in Fiesta Hotel it was to be opened this past weekend.

I think you should check out both. less Business for Mint. I will tell everybody I know not to go there.

I was given an apology

Oh he did apologise? Somehow I had failed to register that from your earlier post... I had picked up Mr. Moro's justification & explanation but not the apology.

tjmurray, apart from the obvious commercial boycott, is there anything you would like us to do? Or any further communicating about this you might like to consider? What about sharing the experience with a good journalist in SD? Someone like Inez Aispun of Diario Libre?

I don't think it was Robert TJ as I have just checked all his posts & can not see any reference to cornrows by him.

I note from an earlier post that you invited Mr Moro to respond here. Maybe he could be persuaded that 'Any bad publicity can be turned into a good marketing opportunity by the correct form of response (i.e understanding & trying to amend for the problem causing the bad publicity)' as mentioned by Robert in another thread? Maybe Robert could be a little more pro-active in this by explaining to Mr. Moro how strong feelings are on this board & suggesting he takes up your offer to rectify the situation?

I appreciate that you have no big desire to make a big song & dance about this but why not - on you next big outing with friends - call by the club & make as if to go in? Then, when you get to the door, change your mind & state your reasons for doing so in front of all those trying to get in. If the Doorman that refused your friend entry is on duty that night ........... so much the better as you can lay the blame directly at him!! ;) ~ Grahame.

TJ has received a response from the manager, good or bad, that's for TJ to decide.

Time to close this before it gets picked over and the same stuff re-rinsed.
