This is Dominican intrigue of large proportions............

https://www.diariolibre.com/noticia...-vincular-a-leonel-con-angel-rondon-BJ9812157

SANTO DOMINGO. Rafael Núñez, exvocero of the Presidency during the administration of Leonel Fernández, reported that since the Government is planned linking the President with Angel Rondon, one of the main accused in the case of the bribes from the company "dubious transactions" Brazilian Odebrecht.

Núñez details that "an important official", which has an office in the Centre of Heroes, would have pressed two communicators through an audit authorized by a judge to their personal statements and their relationship with Rondon, "as a form of blackmail to the" two media figures (...) that carry out "the macabre idea" against former President Fernández.

"This plan would seek out the former President (Leonel) to desist from its pressure against the law of political parties with primary open to 2020", is known in the National Congress or a possible presidential aspiration with the elections of the year says Nunez, who attributes his complaint to a source which asked not to reveal his name.

The exvocero of Fernandez's Presidency does not cite the names of communicators, but by the press conference on the day of today's Julio Martínez Pozo and Dany Alcantara, which unveiled the Attorney General accused them if Odebrecht and then confirmation of that s revelations by the highest representative of the public prosecutor's Office concludes that the two journalists are Martinez Pozo and Alcantara.

Following is the full text of the accusation of Nunez:

An important official, who has an office in the center of the heroes, would have pressured both communicators through an audit, authorized by a judge, of the States of business and personal accounts of the last 8 years and their relationship with the linked employer in the case of the company Odebrecht as a form of "blackmail" the two figures in the media so that they carry out "the macabre idea" against the former Fernández President, said the source.

That plan would seek out the former President to desist from its pressure against the law of political parties with primary open that he is known in the National Congress or of a possible presidential aspiration with the elections of the year 2020, he added.

Even in the afternoon on Thursday an important Senator of the Dominican Liberation Party, which leads the singer voice in favor of open primaries, met with his political team and would have said that the aforementioned draft law "will happen as you want" the informant said.

Internal LDP remain confronted two sectors by the political parties Bill by divergences around the mode of selection of candidates. President Danilo Medina defends that the candidates of the political organizations are elected by the register of the Central Electoral Board at the same time, on the other hand, former President Leonel Fernández argues that it must not impose you a unique way of election to parties because it violates the Dominican Constitution in articles 216 and 277.

DR1 reporting today.......interesting Diario Libre opinion decribed in red and as below in Spanish.

Julio Martínez Pozo and Dany Alcántara investigated in Odebrecht case

Popular news commentators Julio Martínez Pozo and Dany Alcántara are in the limelight, after the Attorney General announced they are investigating these two for their ties with Angel Rondón, the commercial representative of Odebrecht who has admitted to having received around US$92 million in payment for his services to the company. Odebrecht had admitted to paying US$92 million in bribes in the Dominican Republic to expedite the granting of contract work. The radio and TV commentators are best known for their defense of government actions.

The Attorney General Office made public it had obtained permission from Supreme Court special instruction judge Francisco Ortega Polanco to investigate Alcantara and Martinez and their relatives for possibly having served as Rondon in the distribution of the payments to government officers and former officers in the name of Odebrecht. The announcement by the Attorney General Office comes when the deadline for the presenting of the case against Odebrecht is nearing on 9 June 2018. The Attorney General Office will have had a year to prepare the case, including a four-month extension granted in February 2018.

In a press conference at the Dominican Journalists Guild (Colegio Dominicano de Periodistas), Martínez and Alcántara accused Attorney General Jean Alain Rodríguez of acting as an associate of Odebrecht when not investigating the supposed bribes also paid by the Odebrecht associate companies for the 17 projects carried in the country from 2001 to 2014.

Rafael Núñez, former press spokesman for former President Leonel Fernández, said the investigation is part of a supposed dirty campaign carried out in the inside of the ruling PLD party by persons loyal to President Danilo Medina and against Fernández.

The Attorney General Office is investigating 14 persons in the bribes scandal for actions that occurred during the governments of Hipólito Mejia (2000-2004), and Leonel Fernandez (2004-2012). All of the former government officers accused in the case were authorized to post bail, with the exception of lawyer Conrad Pittaluga who is on domiciliary arrest.

Meanwhile, an editorial in Diario Libre alerts to the manipulation of the media by the government. “That is the reason for the multimillion investment of the Administration in advertising and ‘other expenses’ that include a bulging payroll of those that the people call ‘loudspeakers’. “It is evident that someone is manipulating the national agenda and it is not the media that are simply acting as loudspeakers of the music that someone else is playing,” says the editorial on 8 May 2018. Diario Libre calls for the press to fulfill its role and not fall into the trap of the manipulators.

As reported, on Sunday, 6 May 2018, the Attorney General’s Office issued a statement saying that all of those involved in the investigation surrounding the Odebrecht case should cooperate with the authorities.

Surely worth some comments and which of the Dominican news media tilts which way.

Dominican Today is blunt with it's reporting of the situation with the journalists now under investigation:

Govt. ‘loudspeaker’ turns on his boss in Odebrecht fiasco

Santo Domingo.- The journalist Julio Martínez Pozo on Tues. warned president Danilo Medina that a an alleged pact to shield Odebrecht ‘s local associates, will have a “very high” political cost.

Martínez, one of the many “bocinas” (loudspeakers) allegedly on the Presidency’s payroll, is under investigation over alleged links to the Odebrecht mafia in the country, which funneled US$92.0 million in bribes.

“When things that are under that agreement are uncovered, society will be very disgusted, more than with all this,” Martinez said on ZOL101FM.

He stressed that the supposed pact to hide the consortiums of the Brazilian company can spark a scandal as big as Odebrecht’s. “With whom has the pact been, with whom is it that they (the consortiums) have made a pact for their tranquility? Who’ve been the beneficiaries of the pact for the consortium’s tranquility?”

Martinez, investigated together with the also “loudspeaker” Dany Alcántara, stressed that Odebrecht has repaid the Dominican State US$184.0 million, but the company’s local partners haven’t returned a penny. “In the end who’ll pay the political consequences of all this will be president Danilo Medina.”

I somehow doubt if the prosecutors and judges in this case will have the same determination than those in Curitiba (Brazil) had with Operation Car Wash, in persisting with investigations until the truth comes out.

On the bright side, Oderbrecht does build some excellent projects in challenging conditions. I'm not happy about the kickbacks, but at least the construction quality is first-world.

For those that have watched the first season of The Mechanism on Netflix, a so called fictional account based around the Car Wash Scandal in Brazil with a national petroleum and construction companies as major players in countrywide corruption, one can see what was so massively possible in that country and perhaps what is implied in the news story in post #194.

Dominican Today report.....

Santo Domingo.- Embattled journalists Julio Martínez Pozo and Dany Alcántara on Wed. demanded that the Justice Ministry investigate Odebrecht’s subcontractors in the Dominican Republic on its admitted US$92.0 million in bribes paid from 2001 to 2014.

In the document the journalists and TV producers ask Justice minister Jean Rodríguez to take “the necessary steps to determine whether the individuals and commercial companies that, as Odebrecht subcontractors in the country, handled the sum of approximately US$2.1 billion, had knowledge of or participated in. any way they were involved in the consummation of the aforementioned facts, allegedly unlawful.”

“In view of the fact that the deadline to conclude the preparatory stage is about to culminate, we require that such proceedings be carried out without further delays that may serve as a pretext to ensure the opacity of the investigations that it is obliged to carry out.”

Both journalists on Monday denounced being investigated on their relations to businessman Ángel Rondón, who’s allegedly Odebrecht’s “bagman” in the Dominican Republic.

Are they suggesting the USD92m is just the tip of the iceberg?

Does it mean there are at least two numbers....??

The known amount of the bribes and then the ongoing flow of funds to actually do the construction --

Where further 'skimming' might take place

That's what I see when reading it
