I am a travel agent who has booked 3 young adults to Melia Caribe Tropicale in Punta Cana. They are extremely uncomfortable about going to the hotel on Sat June 5, The media in New York has reported that the island was hit with a bad hurricane and that the water is contaminated. I have called DR Tourist board and could not get a straight answer. I don't want to send these kids there if there are dangerous health conditions. Please reply.
Thank you.
First, the island was not hit by a storm, and much less by a hurricane. It was hit by a tropical wave that brought lots of light rain over a four-day period. The problem area was on the border with Haiti, in Jimani, where rivers overflowed from Haiti where because of all the deforestation, there were no tree roots to contained all the water that fell -- more in two days than in six months. Other areas that had problems were in the northeast, also for the same reason of very heavy rains. I read today there were nine dead in Indiana state flooding, that does not mean anyone should suspend a vacation to Chicago!
Jimani is a 11 hour drive from Punta Cana where your tourists' hotel is located. Punta Cana experienced two or three days of light rains, but no more. There are no rivers in that area and the water comes from independent sources.
It is not true that the water is contaminated, as there have been no source of contamination whatsoever in the area.
May I suggest that your guests email you or post on this forum when they get to the hotel to report their own experiences and help assuage unnecessary concerns.

What you need to tell your guests is that their major concern is to bring lots of sunblock as eyewitness reports we are getting from Punta Cana this week is that it's very hot!
