Have been receiving quite a few questions by email focusing on the weather after all the press on the floods that have been appearing internationally. It appears that the country has been drowning!

One person who will be coming to Puerto Plata says that after "hearing about the floods, and the rain and hurricans has put us off so much. Whats the real score?! is it going to rain and rain , like UK weather?"

The answer is NO, NO, NO. Tourists arriving to Puerto Plata will not notice a single thing. In Puerto Plata there are lots of trees and it rains all the time. The problem with the floods that have been covered internationally was the flooding in Jimani which was caused because of major deforestation. This caused the rivers, that had dried out, when so much extraordinary rain fell, to return to their old banks, and then not finding the river, flood a large area.

But Jimani is about 15 hour drive from Puerto Plata. It is far away. It is like floods happening in Scotland affecting London.

Anyway, Caribbean weather is not like UK weather. See http://www.dr1.com/travel/expect/weather.shtml

We stayed there last year and also once before. I was going to go there this time but a good deal came up for the gran Flamenco.
I really like the hotel you are going to - its beach is 'smack-bang' next to the 2nd pool, its got one of Playa Doradas 3 casinos (in my opinion its the best one) the entertainment staff are v good - all round v nice hotel.

If you are into Golf - the resort is built around a course, my hotel is just 2 hotels down the beach (2 mins walk along the beach)

You will be able to watch England vs France over there won't you?

C'MON!

Nice one, cheers for the info. Really can't wait now :bunny:

I hope they'll be showing teh Euro's

The floods occurred in areas far away from Puerto Plata and where you will be vacationing. Puerto Plata was not affected. Aside from an occasional TV report, you will not notice the island had any floods during your trip to Puerto Plata. You should be more concerned about bringing sufficient sunblock.

I am going on the 8th and have been monitoring several sites with 10 - 15 day forecasts............they change from one day to the next, so don't worry!

It looks like it be nice though, dont forget your sunblock - we can be confident that it will be in the mid-thirties!

(I like this link - http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/5day.shtml?world=6517 it always seems to show good forecasts whilst the others don't - it will keep you optimistic ;))

Thank you for suggesting this site. Will monitor its 5-day forecast for Santo Domingo to see how it compares to reality.

There are loads of sites out there trying to successfully forecast the weather days and days in advance, I always look at that one though because it tends to show sunshine while the others are saying rain - it keeps me optimistic whether it is accurate or not, lol.

At the end of the day - the weather will do whatever it wants to do, even if it rains i will be much happier in the DR from June 8th onwards than i would be here in wet, wet, wet Rotherham, UK!

;)

Punta Cana

I am a travel agent who has booked 3 young adults to Melia Caribe Tropicale in Punta Cana. They are extremely uncomfortable about going to the hotel on Sat June 5, The media in New York has reported that the island was hit with a bad hurricane and that the water is contaminated. I have called DR Tourist board and could not get a straight answer. I don't want to send these kids there if there are dangerous health conditions. Please reply.
Thank you.

Thank you.

First, the island was not hit by a storm, and much less by a hurricane. It was hit by a tropical wave that brought lots of light rain over a four-day period. The problem area was on the border with Haiti, in Jimani, where rivers overflowed from Haiti where because of all the deforestation, there were no tree roots to contained all the water that fell -- more in two days than in six months. Other areas that had problems were in the northeast, also for the same reason of very heavy rains. I read today there were nine dead in Indiana state flooding, that does not mean anyone should suspend a vacation to Chicago!

Jimani is a 11 hour drive from Punta Cana where your tourists' hotel is located. Punta Cana experienced two or three days of light rains, but no more. There are no rivers in that area and the water comes from independent sources.

It is not true that the water is contaminated, as there have been no source of contamination whatsoever in the area.

May I suggest that your guests email you or post on this forum when they get to the hotel to report their own experiences and help assuage unnecessary concerns.

Also see http://dr1.com/travelnews/archive/2004/tnews060104.html

and other posts on weather in this site.

What you need to tell your guests is that their major concern is to bring lots of sunblock as eyewitness reports we are getting from Punta Cana this week is that it's very hot!

Weather in Puerto Plata

First, I would like to express my condolences to all the families who lost anyone in the tragic disasters in the souther region. But, I am planning a trip down to Puerto Plata in the next few weeks, and I would like to know what the weather is around this time. I've heard that it is the start of hurricane season, and I would like to know how bad it gets in the resort areas. I would also like to know if the floods have affected the northern parts of the Dominican, if the resorts have be hit by this also.

Relax, summer weather is normally good, albeit very hot, in the Caribbean in general. (Not as hot as summer gets in Italy, though, for instance.) If you check back frequently with this forum, you will get a grasp of what the actual weather has been from people who are in Puerto Plata.

For an overview of weather in the DR, see http://www.dr1.com/travel/expect/weather.shtml

That page has links that empower you to follow the weather as the date of your visit comes nearer. But one of the best sources is just checking back with the DR1 Weather & Beyond Forum.

Regarding to whether the floods have affected the resorts, the answer is no. See http://dr1.com/travelnews/archive/2004/tnews060104.html

Note we have merged your post with this thread on weather in Puerto Plata. As said before, it is practically impossible to predict weather a week in advance in the Caribbean. Overall, weather in the Caribbean is sunny. For any storms or heavy rains that may develop in the area, you just need to monitor it on a daily basis. That is why we have produced the DR1 Travel Weather page for you.

See http://www.dr1.com/travel/expect/weather.shtml

Remember, you can always check back with this board as your arrival date nears.
