Bingo has been around in DR for many decades. There was a big bingo hall near the Mauna Loa Casino in SD back in the 70s-80s. Don't know if it's still there

Subsequent to that, the owners lack Customer service skills, they primarily cater to their buddies, everyone else, just hand over your cash...

I don't see how that's different from a lot of other places in Sosua. When I first went there, I thought it was weird. The places I went I felt like a stray dog that wasn't really wanted around. I thought the Dominicans saw me as an opportunity at best and the expats saw me as a evil ugly American. If I had not had met cool people my second trip, I'd have never gone back.

What you state is the biggest problem for tourism in this country. We get 'em in, but they don't come back. Jamaica, on the other hand, has a very high rate of return tourists.

Sad to hear bad press on the place. A good restaurant owner can be a great concierge and make the difference in tourists coming back to town. If you limit good service to your regs, the business can only go down.

IMHO, he is not a great concierge.

I also apologize for jacking the thread.

Ten years back, I was a barfly at Checkpoint. The Mizners were often the first expats the AI folks would meet and they made a huge effort to give good advice. And on one of my first trips, more than 15 years back, I tried to get a room a Rocky's but he was full. Marco drove me to another hotel and haggled to get me a room at the same rate as Rocky's. Lou at Shark Bar was great with the NYC crowd.

Maybe it's not the chicas driving out tourists as much as the lack of good hosting. Maybe the lure of big money BINGO can bring them in?

It's easy to find a bingo hall. Just look for the nearest Catholic Church. The church has used bingo as a parish fund raiser for decades. I had a aunt who attended bingo more faithfully then she attended church. It was a chance to win a few bucks, socialize with her friends and escape the real world.

All of the people above are and were great people that always treated people the way they would like to be treated.

As for bingo I am in my 40's and love bingo. Call me a geezer and my 250lbs a$$ will be insulted.....

They still look at you the same way for sure.

You just got used to it...

the Jolly has always been friendly to me. They even go out of their way to introduce me to the people there. The next move is to socialize with the customers, not expect the owners to have to socialize with you.

That said, I don't drink there too much as there are too many people smoking for my liking.

Other than obnoxious drunks who treat the staff like chicas the Jolly treats their customers very well. The staff are friendly and funny and are excellent servers. I do not understand the comments of some of the posters who have very little knowledge of this place and what they do for the community. I have been going here for 5 years and have made many lasting friendships. To the small minded low knowledge people on this thread I can tell you have not frequented the Jolly very often and for that I am glad. The crowd there seem to have fun and share none of your negativity.

when that place burned down, i caught a carrito to Sosua so i could take a contribution to them to help with the rebuild. they treated me like they were doing me a favor taking my money. i wish them no ill, but i made up my mind that day that i would never set foot in that place, ever.

Last season I would have sympathized and agreed with this but have to admit that this year has proved us all wrong.
Soaua has actually done quite well this season.OK. Nothing like the good times of Passion, CMP,Classicos etc. but enough that we can just about survive

Sure the total revenue is but a fraction of what it was, but Sosua has regained its dignity as a geriatric bucket list town.

And that's a Good Thing!

I wouldn't really consider my 4 years and probably about 100,000 pesos spent in there a "lack of knowledge of the place"...

But one thing is for sure, I'll never spend another peso in there.

If I didn't dislike that place I would be playing bingo every week!!!

I agree. I am US, & the primary clients at JR are Canadian, but they hate anybody from lower North America, & make it very clear. Also, the noise level....don't start me.

I know they do great good work with stray animals & I salute them for that.
