I know there are many people who are made uncomfortable by the question "so, what do you do?" as they often feel intimidated or challenged. My advice is to respond with a very curious "why do you want to know?"

If someone asked me that question, I'd ask them what makes the most $? (morally and ethically, of course!)

I'm navigating and loading/discharging cargoships when I'm not here.

Back in Denmark people always asked what line of work you're in before they asked for your name. However mentioning salaries and annual income is a no-no (law of Jante, a Danish phenomenon)
Here it's more like it doesn't matter what you do as long as it's profitable.

The question of what I do is always the first I hear when I go through immigration in the airport, so I'm used to it and don't really care anymore. At first I wondered why do they want to know but now :rolleyes: ..........
