Or viahaca it's more likely spelled, it's a small freshwater trout usually fished out of the presa up in San Juan or the Laguna de Cabral. It's really common in the Barahona area and you can find women selling dozens of them on banana leaf strips at the cruces on the highway.

I visited a small fish farming project in the Laguna de Cabral area (Crist?bal?) where they were farming tilapia, is that the same thing?

Time Machine to Barahona

Asopao de camarones, with aguacate on the side. The best I ever had was at Las Brisas del Caribe in Barahona, 21 years ago.

Along the same lines, asopao de mariscos, also in Barahona 19 years ago. But at the long gone Restaurant El Exquisito near the Parque Central.

Since we can't go back time to when Barahona had remarkably good food, I note the simpler choice of pasteles en hojas with some salsa picante.
