I agree, it is very much what you are comfortable with. In North America we did no Salsa until Latinos brought the dance with them. Then people started learning it.

I do find here that most Dominican don't want to learn a dance. They already know how to dance why should they learn a dance....... LOL

I'll agree with that. I mean, let's put it this way. How many Cubans like to dance to bachata??? It's to each their "own". It is as simple as what you have been raised on and nothing more.
Scotty,
exactly that. I've seen many Dominicans dance salsa and pretty graciously. I'm not goin to twist my leg in their path!
Cheers,
Swake

Bartolomeo67,

What is dominican style Salsa in the DR. I remember dancing salsa with one dominican in Punta Cana and I had no clue on how many steps he was doing or what he was doing.

As Planner explained, men start with right foot forward instead of left and consequently all moves go in the opposite direction that we are used to.

If Salsa is an important issue, you might should consider going to Cuba instead. My impression is that Dominicans don't like salsa at all, infact many of them realy hate it. In DR it's all about Bachata, merengue, tipico and regaton.

It all depends where you are: in Santo Domingo dominicans dance more salsa and merengue than on the North Coast and they dance less bachata.
I disagree that dominicans don't like salsa: you hear plenty of salsa on the local radios, it's just that not many of them know how to dance to it.

People usually don't like to do something that they don't

That is not true,
you may not know how to do something but that does not mean that you don?t like it. And yes many Dominicans do enjoy salsa and as a matter of fact the Dominican republic has been the birth place of some of the most famous Salseros such as Jose Alberto aka EL CANARIO, Raulin Rosendo, Cuco Valoy,
Johnny Pacheco founder of La Fania and many more. The only thing is that the Dominican Salsa relates more to the Colombian salsa rhythm more than the Puerto Rican or Cuban style. That is why we are crazier about the grupo Niche from Colombia than a Ray Ruiz from PR.

Hello Mr. Dr,

Yes, I can agree with you on this, but there are those who just don't want to admit to liking Salsa because they don't know how to dance it. If you like Salsa music and the dance, then do the obvious, take dance lessons.

Mr. Dr, do you dance Salsa, and lead with the right or left foot.

gonzaga,

I'm jealous wish I was going. But I know you'll have a blast!
You've mentioned all the clubs I went to. I can tell you I remember hearing Salsa music at La Canita I even danced but I can't remember dancing it at any of the other clubs, hmm maybe it was too much Presidente and Burgal I had ;) ! They play a little bit but of course it's mostly Bachata and Merengue!

Well I'll see you at the DR1 party before you leave, we'll get you started for you trip lol!!!

I am also jealous, this is not fair.......I miss all the fun days of dancing the nights away in POP......

Hi,

Back again and I'm trying to email the Grand Flamenco in POP and the ID I have is not valid. I lost the one I had.

Does anyone have an email that works. I'm wanting the reservation or rooms manager ID, I think her name is Yellenais.

Thanks

A publico taxi waits until the car is full (6 people) to start. After midnight you might wait for hours for the car to fill up with people. What you do is you pay for 6 places even when you are alone or just 2 or 3 people. You only pay 6xR$25 (if that is still the going rate) which is still only a third of a private taxi and you get going without waiting. That's what I do to get back late at night between POP and Sosua.
Bartolomeo
Even if there are 4 others present, tell the driver you want to pay for two (RD $50), you sit in the front alone in comfort. When we get to POP for another RD$ 10 the driver will usually drop me at my front door since everybody else has gotten out.

Puerto Plata no - but Playa Dorada - yes. Go to Mangu to get a mix of those types of music with a little bit of local as well.

noone ever heard of Salsa in Puerto Rico ? forget Cuba....i love salsa but again most dominicans seem to not know the correct way. additionally, i learned merengue and bachata outside of the DR. i learned bachata and merengue in PR (that's the problem). dominicans seem to dance differently from most other latin countries i've visited. they seem a little uncoordinated.

Kyle - Dominicans dance salsa - some very well - but their own way. They dance it completely backwards to the rest of the world! In their opinion the rest of the world has it backwards though....LOL

They are definately not uncoordinated Kyle. They do dance their own way.

YOu will have to come out dancing with us next time you are here.

Light House Lounge at Ocean World Casino plays this Wednesdays and Saturdays. Ocean World is between RIU hotels and Puerto Plata only 5 mins from RIU. You can get free taxi minimum two people if you play in the casino, ask the taxi drivers.

maybe that wasn't a good word. i learned salsa 1-2-3, 5-6-7 and my moves were taught to me by an instructor which i paid 75 bucks an hour. she is a puerto rican professional ballroom dancer. so maybe my salsa is a bit too structured for dominicans. my merengue and bachata were also taught to me by this instructor.

anyway, yes i would love to hang out in POP...

I see what you mean Kyle, ballroom teachers are good they are just very structured. Here the locals don't need to be "taught" they already know how to dance....LOL The style here is much more fluid, much less structured. I can dance either way and enjoy both.

What I meant by backwards - the way you were taught the men go forward on their left foot - correct? Here they go forward on their right foot on a basic! They do most moves inthe opposite direction you are used to.

Ive been to Playa Dorada once, last spring break, and am returning again this february, and am wondering if anyone can fill me in on the nightlife ie discos, etc.
Last time i really only went to the night shows, hotel bar, casino and the Mangu.

Are active/busy and on which night of the week. I know from my friend that La Barrica is dead on a Thursday night, however Friday and Saturday are busy.

I have gotten these club names from the board, Orion, Mountain View, Patio De Johnny and La Canita. Which nights are busy at these clubs and which ones are better (better meaning where you can do a lot of dancing). My friend has stayed at Playa Dorada and she know of all the clubs in this complex. Are there any other clubs in town that I may have missed.

Also, we would like to know approx. how much can we expect to pay for a taxi into Puerto Plata from Playa Dorada, one way and/or return.

The cost of a taxi from Playa Dorada into Sorusa, one way and/or return.

One last question, of all the clubs in Puerto Plata or Sorsua, does any of them play some SALSA.

You picked up on an old thread babyblonde. Come back and ask us again about 2 weeks before you are arriving. Unfortunately much can change here and by the time you arrive what is good here may no longer be! Or PM me and I can update you.
