because it is so much easier to get the gringas to bring in dentists, or politicos, or whatever....

get the gringos to educate the poor or

set up micro finance

or collect for the orphans.

while the one percent here dines out in squalid splendor at Blue Mall

do not mess with me again, please.

i have replaced most of the furniture, lots of the plumbing, lots of lots of.. to be kicked out in the street is really not fun.

nor is knowing that armed robbers in the neighborhood are suddenly so bold as to attack twenty healthy and young American doctors.

it is stressful enough just to have to live in a language and culture which is not one;s own.

The only reason why PR gets less tourists then DR is because PR does not have a Sosua or Boca Chica. Take away all of the horny tourists and DR will see a huge drop in tourism.
.

Maybe you were joking but you really think mongers make up a significant number? I know Sosua is red light town, but the number of people visiting Sosua isn't that high is it? not significant to the numbers that visit elsewhere around the country. ANd I'm not even sure Boca can be described as a significant attraction, there are more Dominicans visiting Boca than foreigners these days. Or maybe I'm out of touch with things Northcoast.

MA, the teeth stop growing by the late teens, maybe early twenty. and this is it, no more. certainly they do not continue to grow after other teeth have been removed, on the contrary, a gap the in jaw causes other roots to start moving and eventually the loss of more teeth. the "growth" of maxillary canines you might have seen in haiti was likely caused by severe malnutrition and infections that cause the gums to recede and hence give the impression of longer teeth.
thank you.

the dentist who told me this is the dentist daughter of the head of the maxilo facial surgery society here in SD, We have had long discussion since I have lousy teeth. And the issue was always to Save the bottom teerh since they are more important.

maybe I can get her to join DR1 and set this to rest.

this is not my specitalty.. i am not a dentist..
HAHA, you don't say, lol
and it has nothing to do with the thread. I saw a guy with a fang in Haiti.. interveiwed him in fact/ His canine tooth went down to below his lower lip bottom. I asked my dentist, she said that the teeth keep growing.. the upper teeth.. that is all I know. I do not know if the incisors grow as well. But the canines do. I know that because I saw that. Do not know why this caused such a stir.

You introduced it to this thread because you told us all about these magical ever growing teeth. Annie, because you saw a damn ugly Haitian once does not rewrite dental anatomy, and because you obviously go to see the most dodgy dentist around still does not change dental anatomy, or maybe she humoured you knowing you were not going to accept otherwise, as we seem to be experiencing here. Now because you are going to continue to keep saying 'they do' and this somehow will change the fact they don't I think we should leave it at that, and to keep you happy allow you to have a set of tusks rather than teeth.
Keep smiling.

"Annie" stick with your "Day job", human physiology is NOT your field.
If Mormons want 12 wives, I say, "God Bless" them!
I can't deal with wives, one-at- a-time!!!
You need to stay out of Utah if you don't like Mormons, just like you should stay out of the "Bad Boy's Locker Room" on "DR1!".
We love you, but you are posting "Stranger" than "Normal" lately!
How can you, or anyone else find fault with visiting doctors, nurses, and dentist who come here to provide the poor with care that their government won't!
Aren't you doing that exact same thing?
CCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCC

No I am not doing the same thing as offering for free services which are available through salud publica

I get paid for the articles I write. I help the Haitians by working with the HAITIAN minister of the diaspora. I do not subvert the system or give my trade work away for free as some sort of missionary.

why do the DOMINICAN dentists not go and volunteer>???? there are plenty of them.
Actually some of them do. The Asociacion Odontologica sometimes holds "operativos" during October, which is Dental health month. They bring a "Unidad Movil" to a public school, they check the children and give them assistance, and they talk to them about the importance of dental health, give them a free toothbrush and toothpaste, and some literature about the right way to brush their teeth.

and when someone with dental credentials from Tufts or Columbia say it is not so, I go with the word of the dental doctor here. So far, no one here on DR1 is more qualified than she is/

You know, for a guy that always asks others for stats or reports, you rarely come up with any. Whys that?

saunders, if there are no readily available statistics, i do not pontificate, unlike you. i provided the test scores to buttress my contention that at least at the testing level, Cuba outperformed both the USA, and the DR, in one particular set of tests. what have you ever provided? my wife says so?

What are you guys arguing about ? I am lost....

That Cuban educational system is better than Dominican ? Bob I agree that it is overrated and they lack of many things but, be honest on that one....

More homicide in PR ? Gorgon you know it s true LOL. Ok may involve less gringo but isn't because PR gets 10000 times less tourists and expats.

actually , Africaida, the homicide rate in PR is 26.2 per thousand , and in the DR it is 25. that is one percentage point, which falls within a statistical margin of error, given the nature of data collection in developing countries. secondly, when we discuss rates per thousand, it does not matter if we are discussing one thousand, or one hundred thousand. it is still rate per thousand.

Hey, that's all I've been say " that it's over rated and the stats are not to be trusted" 1, 136 homicides in PR in 2011. Does it matter if they were PRs or not?

yes it does. YOU are the guy who made the stupid remark that if the doctors had been in PR, they would have been shot. that means that there is a STATISTICAL likelihood that foreigners are more at peril in PR than in the DR. so, it does matter what comprises the homicide stats. even you should be able to figure that one out without outside help. as to the stats being untrustworthy: i prefer to trust them than the insights of a man whose only source of information is what his wife, or her relatives, say.

Well, this proved a lot more difficult to find out. But since I have nothing better to do on this friday morning, here it goes:

According to the Caribbean Tourism Organization, Tourist arrivals in 2012 (Top 6):

Dominican Republic 3,519,987
Cuba 2,201,534
Jamaica 1,072,232
Puerto Rico 985,609
Bahamas 773,986
Aruba 676,315

those numbers do not jive with anything i have ever seen. i have no idea who compiled them

"JMB", I got laid in San Juan just as fast and easy as in Sosua.
Only difference, "Dominicanas" are MUCH BETTER!
The DR's "Tourist Numbers" are artificially high, because they list every US citizen as a "Tourista".
Returning Dominicans who are US citizens are listed as "Tourists", if they use their USA passport.
When an American Citizen goes to "PR", I don't know how they list them. You just get off the plane and walk out of "Jose Munoz" airport, if you arrive from the "Mainland"!

puerto rico is a sand spit compared to the DR, you can drive around the entire island in a day if you want...from mayaguez through ponce to fajardo...

look at the maps again. puerto rico is a sand box compared to the national forest of the DRl We should only be compared to Jamaica and Cuba. maybe Mexico and Costa Rica and Panama...

so mountainannie, since you elect to use size of territory as a measuring stick, maybe we should simply ignore Singapore in any discussion of comparisons.

absolute fact, cccc. the DR lists Dominicans coming home for vacation as tourists. the stats are inflated, relative to other caribbean countries, because they do not list their returning nationals as tourists. thanks for bringing that to light.
