And please stop giving us references to your offshore, engineer whatever job. Its like comparing apples to oranges. There is no comparison to what you are doing and what I would be doing.

And like I stated before, if they say no then it wasn't meant to be...I have a back up plan in place, its not like I'm without work (BTW if you know any nurses in NYC, please send them my way, I have turned down 3 jobs last week from agencies).

But I will ask the specific reason if and when they say no and lets see if it matches your assumptions.
BTW....what will you sell those shares at and how many do you have?

Unfortunately what you may be doing in Costa Rica does not even compare to a position such as this. Medical information is shared daily via fax, telephone, emails, etc...in these "call centers" for the likes of Blue Cross, and other insurance companies that have taken their business abroad. Most Case Managers for large insurance companies do work from home and very few live in the same state/area which they work. Case Managing and nursing is a bit different. Case Managing is not necessarily bedside and most of what a patient needs whether it be post discharge or following the patients care plan can be done via telephone. Actually what you describe as far as "work flow" is no different than it is at any major company. Computer usage is monitored by most every company, especially healthcare. I did healthcare billing for several large companies while here in the DR. My laptop was company issued. Any issues were dealt with by the company's IT&S department. So can this position Shalena has been offered be done at home in another country, YES. It is just a matter of whether they allow it or not but it can be done remotely from pretty much anywhere.

whether or not that happens does not affect the impact her search and her openness have had here on DR1.

Not enough do we share problems ( IMO) and seek solutions here..... always sidetracked about the 2 pesos increase in papayas...........

Many people here need extra income and want to be 'remotely' employable.

There are quite a few posters on this board who have mentioned that they work remotely, but they seem to be in the IT field.
Not everyone is willing to share their livelihood/income on a public board (i know I don't).

This is a bit different..... the company wasn't looking outside the country for a worker.
Now, their first choice has asked a question .... ball back in their court.

I have just been thru a variation of this with a daughter asking for an internal transfer from Australia to the UK..... you could hear the gears grinding in the company.!!!


Yes, she got it but all costs fall to her.... no problem, she requested.

Its a new workplace out there and every move has the potential to be a precedent....

It will be interesting to see where this goes.

I think that, if you get the position, you would, and Should, be paid the same amount, no matter where you do the actual work.
I know "Medical records transcriptionists, who work at home full time, the hospitals even install, and pay for, all "Data Connections", they get the same pay and benefits as those who work at the hospital/medical office.
It's cheaper for the employer if they stay home!

Thank you everyone for the information and the encouragement. The reason I started this thread was to find out how I could work from home, as nurses here make about $250/mo. My first question was obviously not thought out well (basically, how could I sneak and do it) and after getting honest helpful suggestions I just decided to ask straight out. There are 2 things that I wouldn't want to happen...
1. Lose my license
2. Lose my job

But as keepcoming said, actually...other than just the company's preference, there is NO reason I could not do this job here. Itis all telephonic and computer. The same safeguards in place as any other place in the world. I believe someone here had a sister or cousin who continued to work as a Case Manager while on a short vacation here. I'd just consider it a long vacation for me.

I'm just waiting for Mr. tomas2 to let me know what all his fuss is about. Everyday, I send prenatal records to different MD offices by fax.....1 number off and your cousin working at State Farm could find out that his girlfriend's sister has Herpes. As long as ALL presumable and necessary precautions are taken to protect someone's information, whats the issue?

I do honestly feel though, that if they were so dead set against it they would have deaded (that's Ebonics) the suggestion/question when I first brought it up. This company is big with 48,000 employees, a 2013 revenue of $71 billion, and almost 68 million members. This CANNOT be the first time this has come up. And if it has before, maybe they decided on case by case basis because if they had decided BEFORE that they would not allow it, then every Manager and Human Resources worker would know it (yet my Manager has contacted HR who is the one "looking into" it).

I will await her reply and the explanation as to why the company chooses not to allow me to work from here if that is what they choose.
And if they will allow me, then I guess I'll be buying some stocks.

There is a movement going on to outlaw Medical Transcriptions and Medical Coding jobs to be outsourced to other countries like India, Philippines, Etc.

In my opinion after looking at what happened to the Medical Transcription Industry in the US and how it has declined after giving jobs and/or contracts to people that live overseas, it is not a very good idea to go this route.

Actually, they want the jobs to stay for AMERICANS and not go overseas to be given to non-Americans. I am American.

LOL...well, lets just say that I find living here much better than in the States. My children are happier and even turned down spending a summer with my mother last summer in Virginia. They are not stuck in the house on video games like before and although I go back and forth to the states to work, I actually spend more time with my kids now. In the States I worked 60 hours per week to make my ends meet as it is like pulling teeth to get child support from my ex-husband....(although every now and then I get a big check when they intercept his tax refund or such other commodity they give to poor and lower middle class people).

So before I worked Mon-Fri 7am-7:30pm, which meant for all reasonable purposes I only saw and spent quality time with my kids on the weekends (which calculates as 8 days per month). Now, although I have to be away from them for 6-7 days at a time, when I'm home I'm here 7 days without working and with money left over to go places, beaches, etc. So....8 free days with kids or 14 free days with kids, hmmmmmm.
The reason I want to work from home now is that really, I hate NYC. I'm tired of flying. And I just plain wanna be home, waaaaaaaaaaaa!

BTW....I could care less about the men here. I've been with a Puerto-Rican for 2 years and we do just fine
And I'm starting to get use to the crap here (at least the Santiago crap, I dont know about your crap).

Thanks so much, I thought the same thing regarding negativity but I just took all of the info in stride. I was working 8 days NYC and 6 days DR, now I'm gonna switch it and do 6 days NYC, 8 days DR. I'll see how it works like that.
