They wouldn't be specific, only said that they cannot accommodate out of country workers. The HR manager did tell me that they went back and forth over it for a while. They want me to reconsider so are giving me till Monday to give them a definite answer. But I can't take it if not from DR.

I don't think people on this board were negative (especially knowing DR1 !), quite the contrary. They have known Shalena for years (through postings) and we have read over years how she works her butt off to give her children a good life, while trying to do some commendable work for DR midwives.

The only one I know of who are looking now have a basic of RD42,000 with possibilities of up to RD100,000 (I think we know this is a difficult mark to meet). You would be very lucky to find that kind of money working fro home, unless you got your own campaigns and went into it yourself. I think then you could easily meet expectations, and some.
I wish you all the luck, and something will slide into place, keep positive, although I know, with family to consider this gets desperate at times. Not to mention the devoted father you mentioned

Shalena, It sounds like you have stumbled on a business opportunity. Lots of experienced semi-retired RN's in the DR. Set up your own company and bid out. This is a CEU year, so focus all yours on case management. Hire me! I have twenty years of broad inpatient, critical care and ER experience.
Shalena, what do you do for housing when you are in NYC? I could maintain a per diem status at my hospital by doing 4 shifts per month. theoretically I could cluster them to be in Boston 10 days and DR 50 days. 8 shifts every two months. more for extra money. How long have you been doing this? I am a single guy, so your plate is much more full than mine.
LOL...well, lets just say that I find living here much better than in the States. My children are happier and even turned down spending a summer with my mother last summer in Virginia. They are not stuck in the house on video games like before and although I go back and forth to the states to work, I actually spend more time with my kids now. In the States I worked 60 hours per week to make my ends meet as it is like pulling teeth to get child support from my ex-husband....(although every now and then I get a big check when they intercept his tax refund or such other commodity they give to poor and lower middle class people).
So before I worked Mon-Fri 7am-7:30pm, which meant for all reasonable purposes I only saw and spent quality time with my kids on the weekends (which calculates as 8 days per month). Now, although I have to be away from them for 6-7 days at a time, when I'm home I'm here 7 days without working and with money left over to go places, beaches, etc. So....8 free days with kids or 14 free days with kids, hmmmmmm.
The reason I want to work from home now is that really, I hate NYC. I'm tired of flying. And I just plain wanna be home, waaaaaaaaaaaa!
BTW....I could care less about the men here. I've been with a Puerto-Rican for 2 years and we do just fine
And I'm starting to get use to the crap here (at least the Santiago crap, I dont know about your crap).

So, I have an interview coming up for another work from home position, this company is willing to consider me working abroad provided I have reliable, high speed Internet and the ability to make and receive uninterrupted phone calls to the USA.
So I would like to know what I'm going to do before the interview should they ask me. Those in Santiago, is your Internet reliable and high speed? Those of you outside of Santiago what companies have you found to be the best in those areas?
Would you all recommend GoogleVoice or Vonage for clear sounding, uninterrupted (no drops) phone calls and could someone explain to me how GoogleVoice works?
Also I plan to buy an Inversor just for the home office equipment, does that sound feasible to ward off the apagones?

Google voice is dropping support for being accessed thru 3rd party applications. So that would probably not be the most reliable method right now. Perhaps magic jack depending you have reliable internet.

what about a Claro landline? Not good enough?
I call on the cell phone a lot w/ pretty good results.
I think if you push the provider , you can get quite good/fast internet in those big cities

I have Claro, been using them since they were called Codetel in Santo Domingo now in Santiago. Their service is very good ONLY if you get 2 MBPS, they always offer 1MBPS and its not sufficient enough to run a business from home, go with 2 or more MBPS and you will be fine. As for your communication device, download Skype, I have used it for Years when I worked from home via Elance doing Telemarketing calls for Real Estate, never an issue, has VM should you miss a call or on another call and of course can accept inbound calls once you pay for your Subscription. The Sub is about 12 bucks a Month and you can create many USA numbers should you be required to have a few. Each number is about 8 bucks, its so easy and reliable its a joke for the money...Over all, You can create your own number when hired and if asked if you have Skype, tell them yes since all Skype to Skype calls are free, then just provide your SKYPE ID which you will create when you open your free account/profile and wait on their call that day. And to address your IP concerns, no worries, they will never know via Skype and if using their CRM which I'm sure you will need to in order to track patients etc, you can download one of those hide my IP addys from CNET .COM which never have hidden viruses, that is always key when downloading such programs, always loaded with tracking or hacking bugs, so always be sure to have a good Anti-Virus installed which again, can use CNET or go to Microsoft.com and download essentials, works very well and I suggest doing a Maleware scan via their tool once a Month as well, all can be found on Microsoft.com in the security section, hide my IP is via CNET or just do a search, but I trust CNET.com

We have Claro at the house, which works fine. VoIP is not very bandwidth intensive (you do want 2mbps), so for voice only the Claro service is fine. I use a phone provided by my company, which when plugged in looks to our system like I am sitting in an office in our HQ.
You definitely want an inverter. I also have a surge protector/UPS for our internet connection and my work phone. This ensures there's a "clean" cut over when the power fails, and no dropped calls.
When I am in the states, we use Skype for video, which sometimes is a little sketchy, as much because my house in the states is in the boonies and I have sat. internet. For voice, it works ok (we mostly use either my Verizon wireless or the Claro landline service for voice calls - it's just easier...pickup a phone and dial).

I'm sorry but most of what you all are saying is going over my head as I know how to use the computer but setting it up is another issue. I don't even know what bandwidth is! LOL. I have Claro Internet and home phone now except my Internet is finicky at times but overall it has been good.

As far as the work from home positions go I have been using mostly indeed.com. I also posted my resume there so I get alot of calls from employers. Many insurance companies use Nurse Case Managers, it has been hard for me because I have only clinical experience, no real Case Management experience so getting past the first chopping block from HR is usually the problem. I have never had a problem getting a job if my application ever reaches the manager, its the getting to the manager that is the hard part. HR has key words to look for in the application process and only a third of the applications put in actually get to the manager.
Also, Indeed.com's jobs are reputable.

I was given the other job out of a little over 300 applicants so I know its just a matter of time for me.

I work from home too and would personally not even think about anything less than 4-5 Mbps connections (see also: https://support.skype.com/en/faq/FA1417/how-much-bandwidth-does-skype-need), as if you want to make quality calls, I would opt-in for some "spare" speed for security. If you are in a call, and want to do quality screen-sharing or other simultaneous tasks, those of course eat some bandwidth (...speed...) as well.
Also, I would opt-in for main and back-up connection (not from the same service provider), if the other ones goes down, and they sometimes do, you are not completely cut off from business.
Investing in an inverter is definitely a good idea, and that together with some proper voltage protection (surge protectors) to avoid damaged equipment.
Hey. If you now someone that is good at writing in English have them contact me. I have more writing work than I can handle. It doesnt pay all that much, but you can get up over $40K+ pesos part time if you write well and relatively quickly. I know a few people who are making a living with writing here in the DR. You don't need a fast internet connection and it is less stressful than taking customer service calls or doing sales.
The only thing is that the subject matter can be really boring - like HVAC repair or staffing. But, for those who can manage to bang out 1000 words per hour of good quality work, $2000 or more U.S. per month part time is definitely possible. Right now I would be willing to pay $10 per hour for 750 words of quality work. I have found the good writers are slow, and everyone else are not good writers. I somehow manage to combine being pretty good and pretty fast. I just sit back with my Windows 7 voice-to-text and talk it out. Then I edit it. I can get up to 1200-1300 words per hour that way. I could go faster but the software is not very accurate. But, it saves my hands and wrists a lot of trouble.
