The secret is!!!!... and this may be a shocker! Most Dominican bsuinesses do not really want to make money. Why else would they and their employees go so far out of their way to provide the ****tiest service one could ever find. The owners do nothing of it, hell they support it.
It takes work to make money, most dont want anything to do with work. Resting under a coconut tree or drinking in a colmado.

I do not agree with this at all.

I don't think it is right to say that Dominicans don't want to work. The problem is a complete lack of education at all levels. Most people do not understand what it takes to make a good business succeed. They have never learned and it is sad. They don't know the words Thank you and Please. They don't know what good service means.
It is incredible hard to run a good tourist business here, because where do you find the professional people to do the work.? If you need 20 people you might be lucky to find 1 or 2 good people - the rest just don't know the basics.
As a foreigner they will always try to take advantage of you and they simply do what they have seen others do for their whole life.
This is the main problem in this country - education education and education.
The politicians do not really see the problem and some of them do not care either. Keeping a country in ignorance is killing me and it is completely unfair to future generations.
Try to find Profesional prople to do some work in our home.. A new door , a new terrace or new tiles... Nobody has ever learned anything and I know more about putting tiles than any Dominican.. Always at least hundred mistakes and something looking awful. At least at the North Coast I have given up finding a good handy man.
So this is a problem in all aspects in this country and how can you move forward and succeed if you know nothing?
Wirhout education this country will accomplish nothing and it is indeed sad.

Good for DR, good for North Coast.

YEs, but probably not good for those Vendors next to the port who were already WALLED off. their sugarplum dreams vaporized.
...but they were promised a slice of the action
and now will probably be BULLDOZED..
That little beach in between the Port and RIU is pretty nice btw, very tranquillo, so much so that the RIU people were using it as well.
Its probably a safe guess that we can kiss that Beach Access goodbye for good.

And Who else will be Bulldozed I wonder ? how about those homes directly in the path of the the new Highway where it Stops abruptly in a couple places.
Its pretty dramatic ,if you look closely.
Will they be compensated at all ? i highly doubt it..

just saying.

Perfect business deal.
Carnival Corp. gets two hotel properties by it's cruise port.
If they do a quality renovation this will be a nice property.
Great deal for the RIU group.
They can divest themselves of two old hotels that did not generate premium income because of the location.
RIU will focus on Punta Cana where the money is for them.
They now have six hotels in P.C. Including two new hotels Riu Palace Bavaro (Dec 2011) and RIU Republica (June 2016).

In my estimation most of the profits will stay within the Carnival group.
I expect the trickle down effect for North Coast businesses to be minimal.
So far the port of embarkation/disembarkation is Fort Lauderdale.

This is old news Carnival has been negotiating to purchase this property for awhile now but until I hear an official announcement from either Carnival or the Riu's corporation this is all just rumors.

construction workers (plus architects, hardware stores, etc) doing work at Amber Cove or at excursions/stores that upgraded facilities.
extra bus drivers for excursions
mechanics serving taxis and busses
local restaurants, taxi -bus drivers gotta eat somewhere nearby no?
extra people hired by excursions, not just 'owners' but many excursions added employees.
know some stores down town receiving tours like new cigar tour
Metro and Caribe tours more traffic because some people came from outside NC to work and now go home inbetween ship visits
ripple effect, all those people more spending money at bars, food stores, restaurants, hair salons, putas, pharmacies, etc.

yeah, the money trickles in but it is different than promised treasures of babylon. even the coconut guy in front of the cathedral feels the cash flow selling coconuts at a dollar each. what did not come was a massive boom for restaurants, bars and shops. but those employed by the port and supporting facilities are happy

What actual benefits have the 350,000 tourists actually brought to the DR?

Are there any people here on DR1 that have directly benefited outside of the owners of Ocean World?

Each time a cruise ship pulls in, it pays a fee for each and every passenger aboard that ship to the DR Govt. as well as sizable port fees. Now what the Govt. does with this revenue is of course another matter, but the monies are paid.

Regarding your second question, you already know the answer to that even though I'm sure it is a very short list.

Cabarete
Friends of mine in Sosua say very little of the much promised tourist traffic from cruise ships is seen in Sosua(?).

And that Pattern will not likely change as there is just not enough time in Port to do everything, Sosua is surely not at the top of the List for " must see" attractions in the Area.
This was so easily predicted that is boggles the mind how anyone thought these Cruisers would be ever be seen around Sosua, totally disregarding Time or displaying any Urgency,
with bulging Pockets of money.

Once in a while a small group may be seen stopping at like Playa Alicia for an hour or 2 as they did in the beginning ( and has there even been eveb a single other Bus load since then ? ) ..

But Cruisers with their Flower Shirts sauntering down like Pedro C, checking out at Restaurant Menus ... that is just never going to happen
and proves how delusional some people were to buy into it as a boon for the town of Sosua.

I know lot of people that were all excited and anticipating cruise ship pax coming to Cabarete, too. The entire north coast was going to see a boom in tourism from the cruise ships!

Exactly. The result is more jeepettas for the Senadors and very little benefit to the locals in this area. The Gorgon was very clear on this situation early on and he has not been proven wrong.
It will take only a few bad incidents and those cruises will stop. The good news is that if they do stop, the locals will hardly notice.

A potential long term benefit virtually impossible to track is that a cruiser might return to the DR to vacation or retire. That is about the only potential benefit I see from cruises.
The voluntourism likely does more harm than good, so best those just go away.
