Many/Most of the "AI" hotels have closed, "WHY" because they have no guests!
If the DR would offer a decent product they would have stayed.
The "DR Formula" seems to be open a new, or remodled property, have a lot of guests, give a good value.
THEN, start to cut corners on everything at the hotel.
The "Food" is usually the first to suffer.
The "Drinks" taste like sugar water, and they give you a disposable 8 oz. cup of warm Presidente draft!
They start serving the same chicken, pasta, and "$hit", at every meal, people don't like it, they post about it on the internet, and tell their friends not to go.
End of hotel.
Punta Cana is using a high end approach, and is doing much better.
Their target guests have money, and are spending it for premium vacations.
NC "AIs" cater to the "White Trash" crowd, from the USA & Canada, England & Eastern Europe.
Not much hope left "Up There"!
CCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCC

ps., 99% or "AIers" never leave the property, and could care less about seeing the "Real DR"!

My guess is that more hotels won't be built due to the large investment required, however condos still seem to be continuing. Isn't there some redevelopment being done across the street from Janet's mercado? Maybe North Coast need to identify itself as the condo/villa vacation place of choice and focus on that and forget about pushing hotels and AI's. If you want a "cook yourself, visit bars and restaurants, rent-a-car type vacation" - where would you rather go (Punta Cana or North Coast)? Not too much to do around PC I think.
So just make the north towns more friendly to these types of tourists. Cleanliness, traffic control, sidewalks, and general chaos needs to be looked at.

By default that is the way the north coast is going, condos and not hotels. The developer gets in and out and then moves on.

I have no information on if the abandoned project across from Janet's will be restarted. We all hope so.

At least some of the other 10 or so other projects around Cabarete that never made it did not even started construction. That tells you that it is not even easy to build condos and have them sell. The ones that did well in Cabarete are directly on Cabarete beach. Off the beach and the chances are far lower to succeed.

Garden Hotel in downtown Sosua has bought the hotel directly across the street and is refurbishing it. At first I thought it was a big mistake with all the "changes" in Sosua. Maybe not, eh ? Garden Hotel has done well for a long time thought they admittedly cater to a certain crowd that will be hit hard by the new town rules.

What I would like to see are more small boutique hotels targeting couples. Places like Los Gingos near Gaspar Hernandez. It's cheaper than an AI and they have a high staff to guest ratio. That's where I would take someone in the DR on a reasonable budget.

While that is a smart approach for people to come up with a small business, it is not something that is going to influence travel agencies and tour operators to recommend an area.

It doesn't help that beachfront property is selling for $1000/sq mt on the NC... Tour operators want 50 hotels with 1000 rooms, not 1000 hotels with 50 rooms.

Based on this article, https://fantasiafm.com.do/intalaran-...abarete-sosua/
it looks like the changes taking place in and around Sosua are definitely coming from the Attorney General's Office here
in Santo Domingo. Is this truly the beginning of the end of sex tourism in Sosua?

Yes, this is from the top of the DR government. People who think the local governments and tourism people are in charge are missing that detail as I have pointed out many, many times.

Intalaran legal office to address problems affecting tourism Cabarete-Sosua
The Attorney General's Office announced that install an office of legal services in order to address various issues, including promoting prostitution, significantly affecting tourism in Sosua and Cabarete.
The prosecutor in the judicial district of Puerto Plata, Nu?ez Pichardo Alba stated that this office will operate at the headquarters of Tourism Security Specialist Corps (CESTUR).
Nu?ez Pichardo said that this unit Public Ministry is a necessity due to the high levels of conflict, the rise of sexual exploitation, child sex tourism, pimping, trafficking and consumption of drugs. among other criminal methods.
The representative of the Public Ministry reported that all these social ills have become a serious threat to tourism, so that "we must confront to promote a healthy return in Sosua and Cabarete in regard to family holidays."
Fiscal N??ez Pichardo thanked the Ministry of Tourism (MITUR) and the Tourism Security Specialist Corps, having hosted this motion of the Attorney General of the Republic, Francisco Dom?nguez Brito.
He noted that this office will work in a space that has given CESTUR the prosecution for these purposes.
He argued that if "we take walking tourism in our destiny must unite again to fight those evils, especially the promotion of prostitution, affecting this important activity that constitutes the backbone of the economy of the Dominican Republic."
He said both Sosua and Cabarete are two spaces shelter foreign tourists, but not for this reason, "we must close our eyes or burying our heads in the sand like an ostrich when he warns that the danger comes, but to denounce those responsible to disguised as vacationers come to pervert our youth and money base raping our young people. "
He acknowledged that sex tourism has invaded the streets of Sosua, especially the El Batey, where the fun places are concentrated, but with the opening of this office's prosecution of Puerto Plata which is mandated by the Attorney General of the Republic "faced these problems with the oversight of our families to enjoy a healthy tourism. "
He revealed that investigate complaints made leaders Avocaciones Hotels and Development Sosua-Cabarete, in the sense that daily come to this area full buses of young people from different villages in the Cibao region, which provide their bodily charms foreigners who come as tourists to this destination to satisfy their sexual appetites.

It's amazing. Sex tourism has been part of Sosua for the past 14 years I have been going to Sosua. They just noticed it? It just became a problem?

DR suddenly gets morals....only when it comes to foreigners. It will be much more difficult to look into its own society......

It would indeed be fantastic if Sosua, Cabarete, Camino Del Sol and the surrounding areas of, Sabaneta, La Union, Montellano and Puerto Plata will be made safe for tourists and local families.
Hopefully this will institute competent and trustworthy policing of the P.N. for all, especially Dominican citizens. Let us include prosecution and lasting incarceration of apprehended and convicted criminals, in order to protect citizens and tourists alike.
It would also be desirable to eliminate all of the distasteful gentleman's clubs, night clubs and the associated prostitution in the Punta Cana area which is not in line with high class family tourism.
In addition Dominican families should be protected from prostitution and associated bars in Dominican neighbourhoods. We all look forward for these positive changes to take place soon.
No doubt the well-being of Dominican citizens is of the utmost importance in the eyes of elected officials.

In reality, this is a real need. I visit every three or four months and have an ex-pat friend in the condo/apartment complex whose health is failing. He has no connections back in the U.S. He and I have talked about some of his options and I am genuinely concerned about him. Such a idea, then, is actually a good idea with an actual market . . . though I do not know the size of that market. I also wonder if such a place would cut down on some of the ex-pat suicides as this type of place might provide them a better option, especially if such a place was run professionally and genuinely offered care.

We've heard this idea before, but how about some assisted living facilities. Let old guys move in for the cost of the social security check and it would be an AI. Leave him $50.00 a month out of his check for una chica a month and a pizza meal out or something.

Sorry about not adding the post. This was the post I was talking about. With as many aging ex-pats present on the North Coast, this idea has some merit.

While this is all very moral and just. There are a few things here that don't add up:

1. Almost all prostitution in the DR is Dominican to Dominican/Haitian (every spy fleck village has a few beer bars) - it is a cultural thing that is legal in this country. The non-locals just use the facilities provided, they are not the source of it. There are almost no non-locals going around in the barrios impregnating 12 year old's, compared to the local tigers. Get this in your head.

2. The NC has almost entirely closed down as an AI destination, while at the same time Sosua and Cabarete saw an increase in sex-trade. Almost every AI that I know has closed/scaled down with the exception of the Sosua central one. But every other one has scaled/closed down.

3. The drug culture, use and crime has eroded any safety on the NC, for locals and non-locals alike. The safety that used to exist is gone from the streets. The police are more corrupt then ever and are either on the take or criminals themselves. Chicago in the 30's.

4. There are no alternative jobs (sugar mill, mining, farming, light industry are not able to provide jobs/money).. so people turn to crime; drugs, robberies and prostitution. By closing down a legitimate (although not appealing) source of money, more people will become desperate.

5. All these bad choices by the DR govt might be OK for those with the means to visit the next island or those who sleep in fortified villa's in SDQ, but it is not OK for my local family, who day-by-day see an increase in crime and insecurity.

Conclusion
All you do-gooders should either shut up or come up with real economic alternatives to feed an ever growing population on the NC

Would you want to be limited to una chica a month?
Eliminate the pizza and make it two chicas a month.

Oh wait, you said it would be an "AI", shouldn't "chicas" be included?

Windy, while the reduction of prostitution is in itself a good thing (which it is), the applauding of this as the solution to what ails the DR NC is something that is going on, without providing viable economic alternatives, on this forum. Furthermore, the assumption that the foreigners prey upon the locals is so incorrect it is laugheable.

This so-called solution is a mirage and will do very, very little to lift the population out of it's moral and financial morass...

Meanwhile the real issues lie untouched; unemployment, corruption, crime and failed family structure.

I have come to believe that the DR will slowly slide towards an island ghetto similar to PR.
