get over it. no barrio kid goes to a private school unless there is a gringo bonking kid's ma somewhere in that picture.
we will have to agree to disagree on that.

Actually my wife was sponsored to go to private school by a rich Dominican woman.
upper class dominican family is not a barrio family. what schools barrio kids go to? kids of parents working minimum salary? of single mothers? of maids? of tarjeta solidaridad recipients? i know plenty of dominican brats going to private schools whose parents are dominican. but they all have money. private schools are for those who can fork out the fee, be is 10k dollars or 1k pesos. those who need to lick plaster off walls for their daily dose of calcium do not go to such schools. geez.
yes, which is exactly what i said before, in regards to unis: smart poor kids may be sponsored, either by private people or companies. someone forks the fee.

There are several private schools on the North Coast that charge less than $100 USD a month tuition. Some of these school are no better than public schools. However, the parents can say that they send their child to private school. They pay for the status. On the other hand, some of these schools are really great, almost equal to a couple of schools that charge 5 - 7 times that amount.

The upper crust private schools may offer scholarships, but those kids have troubles keeping up with other, non academic standards within the school. They are not able to bring a laptop to school. They cannot pay to take part in after school classes, such as karate or ballet. Their parents don't have the confidence to participate in the learning community. They cannot compete socially, as they don't have the money to do what other kids do in after school/weekend time. Thus, they are always different.
I believe the most important point is that there is little upward mobility here in the DR, regardless of education.

i am sure they are. life is hard if you spawn.
Without spawning neither you nor me would be here to discuss this.
Nonsense.
The public school system in this country forces the parents to send their kids to private schools to get them at least a bit of education in disciplined circumstances.
In public schools teachers (= political 'botellas') often do not come to class (too hot, rain, huelga, etc.), classes with 40 students are common, water + toilet paper unknown, ....
