I flew in to Las Americas yesterday with expired residency and had to buy a tourist card. I ended up in the line with a group of indigenous people, South American natives. A woman from immigration came along and asked them where they were from, Venezuela. She left and later the entire group was pulled to the side. It took another hour to get through I never saw them again. Another group from another flight was guided in to the VIP longe, those guys didn't look very VIP to me. Never saw them again either.

It took an hour to get through on a Wednesday? Are you making this story up? I've only seen very long lines at Las Americas during the holiday season

You don't need to wait to renew your passport. You can do it with less than a year on it with no problem.

The problem is that I have a Canadian visa in my passport and I plan to visit Canada arround september, so I will change it in October when I wont be able to travel because will left exact 6 months to expire.

No it didn't take an hour to get through immigration, it took another hour after they pulled the group of indigenous people to the side, that was pretty much two hours all together.

The visa or the passport expires?

If the passport, you need to carry the old passport to show the visa...

Last December for new year eve I went to Aruba with friends, while we was with the inmigration agent one of our friends filled out wrong one of the inmigration cards they give you at the airplane, and the agent told him to re write a new one and also told him do it fast because just landed 2 airplanes from Venezuela and to work with them is very slow. I stayed in the other side waitting formy friend while the 2 other friends went to pick up the suitcases, by the time I was there I saw when inmigration officer didnt acept one guy from the group because he didnt know how much money he had in the pocket and wasnt sure where he was going to stay, was sent to seat and wait for an oficial.

Its very sad to see those things, and reminds me when i visited Sint Marteen the inmigration officer though I was visitting to stay living, a lot questions and repeatting same question after some minutes if I went to work to Canada, asked if my hotel was paid and then she took my reservation and went to the office to call the hotel to check if my reservation was paid and returned with a Supervisor, had to show her all my money and all my credit cards, asked if I could use the ATM with my credit card, where I work and again If I went to Canada to Work, when finally the supervisor made a sign with his hand telling let him go.

I'm not trying to be a jerk but how would you know? Did you sit there and wait for the people to come out of immigration? Usually most people would get their bags and get out of there

Dude..know what?? I was in line to buy a tourist card since my residency has expired. A was next to the group of indigenous people. After an hour in the line a woman from immigration came and asked them were they were from. A little later the woman from immigration came back and told the Venezuelans to follow her. Still in the line to buy tourist card. Another hour and I had the stamp in my passport. That was two hours to get through immigration. You go through immigration before you pick up your bag and go through custom.

Done.. I'm not going to waist another five minutes on this thread.

I'm amazed by the number of Venezuelans that come here, especially an indigenous group like this for whom the plane fare is fairly expensive, when they could easily go to neighboring Colombia or Brazil by bus.

I wonder what advantage(s) they think the DR has to offer over those countries(?).

Hey I said that i'm not trying to be a jerk but the story sounds like a product of your imagination. Im in and out of that airport at least once a month and even when its busy ive never seen it take anyone 2 hours to go through customs. Especially on a Wednesday!!! But ill leave it be since youre not wasting anymore time here.

I break my promise I'm going to waste another five minutes on this thread. If you're in and out of Las Americas at least once a month you're most likely Dominican, foreign resident or perhaps a Diplomat, you don't buy a tourist card.

Now I'm done, unless there's another smart ass comment I have to respond to.

I am trying to decide whether to make my next trip to RD the usual 29 days or stretch it out to 90 days. Two more months in the RD puts at least another $3-4,000 into the local economy. After reading all 16 pages of this thread I will stick to the usual 29. Thanks.
