Again, I'd love to know the year round stats behind that place, I can see Summer being slow, but really curious about high season...

I drive by there at all times of the year since before and after it opened. Looks dead every time, the Ahnvee, that is.

As you an see above, there was a coordinated raid on establishments considered to pimp girls.

local authorities express support of the fight against pimping and prostitution:
http://z101digital.com/articulos/se...en-su-lucha-contra-el-proxenetismo-07-25-2018

Google Translation:

The Puerto Plata Destination Tourism Cluster, the Puerto Plata Chamber of Commerce and Production, the Hotel and Restaurant Association of Sosúa and Cabarete, the Sosúa Sustainable Development Association, the North Hotels and Tourism Association and the Hotel Association of Playa Dorada (AHPD) on Tuesday expressed its support for the judicial authorities when facing prostitution and pimping in Sosúa and Cabarete.

Through a press release, the institutions that represent the tourist and commercial sector of Puerto Plata described as accurate and strict the measures taken by the authorities, especially the Attorney General's Office, after carrying out an operation in which it was raided and closed two centers where pimping was practiced, and 70 Dominican women were rescued.

They explained that the tourist destination Puerto Plata has a proud origin in the harmonious cultural, historical and family development of Sosúa, which has been disrupted in recent years by unscrupulous businessmen who take advantage of the poverty of many young Dominicans and foreigners by submitting them to one of the most low and despicable human condition, often with the indolent gaze of the community, its officials and political leaders.

They maintained that the actions carried out by the Attorney General represent a great contribution to the solution of this problem, under the strictest adherence to the Constitution and the laws.

"The pimping business is prohibited in Sosúa and Cabarete and in any other place in our tourist province and in the country, in this sense, we reaffirm the gratitude and support for this process started in the last days, hoping it will be a continuous management, without pause and without excess, until we manage to rescue, in a joint effort, two of the most attractive and differentiated destinations in the Caribbean, "his statement concludes.

Might the authorities be trying to clean up the bad image of Sosua with these raids?

Nah, that can't be it. Must be something else.

Have they now deemed prostitution illegal in the DR? Is this the grounds they had to go after all these bars and restaurants where girls hangout? Obviously as mentioned there were a few bars that were caught red handed, pimping which is illegal, but there may be some messy court battles for the businesses who only had girls as patrons. Do we expect this actress and gobmint who saved the 70 plus women will now fund a job placement rehab program, or will they and their families just starve. Interesting events for sure, hopefully it doesn't increase the crime rate.

Clearly, the MoT official I spoke with couldn't have possibly meant his "urban renewal" statement, and I must have been blowing smoke...:cheeky:

Perhaps they think providing a safe haven for prostitutes and their patrons while making $$$ = pimping.

Think of it this way. The Dominican Government and the Dominican People do not like the reputation that prostitution gives the DR. If there are ways to reduce this reputation, they are going to find them. The recent raids are proof of this. The urban renewal described in other posts is a true goal.

(While you might call all this a government Dream and that prostitution is what it is and forever shall be here to stay, there is a plan called Dream City in the works just east of Sosua. The sales office is across the street from Playero. )

(Yes , I am guilty of generalizing, but I understand what is going on. )

Nobody is going to starve. Why do they need a gov't program to help them find a job? Why can't they get busy and find one themselves? Sure,, an uphill battle for an uneducated unskilled Dom female, but get up off your fat butt and try.

And it's not like this just happened overnight. This has been coming for some time. Years.

Yes, change like this can be painful. But nobody's gonna die.

Do you truly believe they will find jobs? Most, as you say are uneducated (not necessarily their fault) and/or single mothers etc. Maybe they can find jobs as waitresses or cashiers- but as they continue to close bars those opportunities are all but nonexistent.

An uphill battle? Here's the reality. A lot of these girls/ women do not have the mental capacity
to complete any type of education be it free or otherwise. Most if not all of them know nothing else
other than selling their goods to anyone who's willing to pay for it. Will someone please explain to
me how a government who is one of the most self serving corrupt institutions in the western hemisphere is going assist a group of the most ostrichsized women in this country?

Could you just imagine the precedent that would set. How would one draw those lines.
"Toto, I have a feeling we aren't in Kansas anymore..."

A Dominican gubmint policy formed without a long-range view? What a shock...

You really think most of these Lazy girls actually WANT to work. Want a real Job , with reg HOURS and real Responsibility ???
Puulease ..
No one in their right mind is hiring any of them .
Prostitution IS the SOCIAL NET .. This is the Welfare System of the DR.. Take this away, and the Dom Govt has a huge problem on their hands ..
MORE CRIME, lots more Crime ... And they KNOW this , and dont care . and that is a much bigger " crime" than selling Toto for money or even straight up Pimping.

a little information for some people here who seem to be in need of it.

there are very few people in this world who just want to stay at home, lie on their backs all day, doing nothing. that is a myth created by wealthy people who want to pay slave wages, and want to claim people will not accept them because they are lazy.

some people here need to go to places like the intersection near to the public hospital in POP, and see all those carritos taking people to places like Sosua and Cabarete , where they work for pittances, from which they have to subtract 100 pesos per day just for travel. some barely break even on payday. go to the Javilla and see all those people who come in from places like Esperanza and Navarette, to work for pittances changin bedlinen in cabanas.

then these people get flagellated by people who come from countries where girls from good families get into the escort business, doing the same thing the girls here are doing..only thing is that they are driving Corvettes.
