I have only been to Sofia which was over rated and beyond snobby clientele. The tomahawk ribeye was decent. Probably 50 places in NYC with better steak. Maybe more. Don Pepe is excellent. Pate Palo, decent. It gets points for the location and ambience but would be my third choice in plaza espana. Rita’s and Don Nestor would be ahead of Pate.
No mention of Bricciola, Boga Boga, Meson Iberica, etc.

I lived two blocks or so from Don Pepe in Gazcue and never went. Went to new location once. I used to go to vienna caribe all the time for the saturday night jams. I think I went to chalet suisso once when peter was playing surf tunes.

I'm pretty fond of SBG Kitchen in Downtown Center. Food is very good and reasonably priced. I usually go in off hours since it gets pretty full during traditional Dominican dining hours.

Then we were almost neighbors. I had an apartment for years on Bolivar above Banco Leon at the corner of Pasteur and Bolivar.
Walked to Don Pepe many evenings and had great meals there. My go to fast food place was also close by in Plaza Gazcue......Comida Zhang.
Never forget going to Chalet Suisso for the first time and hearing those American 60's/70's songs coming from his speakers.........always made it a stop when time would permit.

Cappuccino was Always my favorite restaurant in Santo Dom.. It has three separate areas - one very formal, one casual formal, and a sorta coffee bar/deli/ ice cream parlor where I used to go to have lunch.. There were not so many place to get a Really Good Meal and also be comfortable eating as a Solo Female Traveler.
in the front end - by the Unbelievable Dessert Section (Pasteries and Gelato ) - there is also a case where they sell their own sauces to take home - along with their bread and various Italian salamis/ imports....
The front end has a big screen TV - tuned to Italian Soccer - of course.
The more charming Bistro section is where me and my buddies would go for lunch. It was right near the old US Consulate and had quick service and very reasonable prices so one could get in and out easily...
The other side - separate entrance - is decorated in the more Ornate Old Spanish Style - Mahogany and Rococco (sp?) - I expect it fills up in the late evenings.
I rarely went anywhere else..
Except -- well - there were a couple..

For those who do not live in the Capital - OH please go to the Capital! I know that it can be dirty, and taxing to get to, and overwhelming for those who are used to Coastal Life.
But the Productions At the Teatro Nacional and Belles Artes are World Class.
And - then - Cappucinnos is open both Before and After the theater.
I had a buddy who came in from Bayahibe who owed me a lunch. He arrived wearing SHORTS. One Does Not Wear Shorts in the Capital. I was Dumbstruck.
I called Cappucinno's where I had my heart set on going to lunch and asked if would be OK if he arrived in shorts since I did not want him to be embarrassed. (I already was! I mean-- SHORTS? in the CAPITAL?)
The man on the phone was most gracious.
"Oh, no, absolutely, we accept anyone in whatever they are wearing" - or words to that effect.
Excellent Food. Excellent Service. Moderate Prices.
I miss Santo Domingo.

Santo Domingo does indeed have it all. The biggest turnoff is the traffic. If spending a weekend park your car and let Uber take you where you need to go, it will eliminate the stress.

Allegre I heard many good things about. Haven’t been there since I’m not living there anymore and only come 4-5 times a year, next week I’ll probably try. Okra is opening today, looks very promising (acropolis where tony Roma’s used to be.

I love Paladart as well in Juan Dolio. It's my go to place everytime, I prefer it over Meson. Will be visiting next week

Just my thoughts but I think the best restaurants in SD centro are the smaller ones that never get mentioned on the big list of Top Ten.

For a late night snack a couple minutes from Agora Mall is La Muyayo. Opens at 7:00 PM and closes 2:30 AM.

I could show you some 'out of the way' places in my area... you might call them shacks
where you eat really well and at an affordable price
