Last Saturday night, we met 3 couples/friends we haven’t seen for awhile, for dinner and drinks. One of them asked us what the heck is going on in DR, is it really so dangerous, etc etc etc. All three couples knew friends or family who have cancelled DR trips and gone elsewhere. I tried to steer the conversation away, but they kept coming back to it.

I’m afraid there’s a long way to go before this is no longer affecting tourism.

To me all the tourist deaths were heavy hearted.

The couple who died together or simultaneously however you want to call it really perplexed me. The explanation provided by the DR authorities stating that the other died by the shock of looking at a dead body is ludicrous. Any future trip to the DR for me is being put on hold until a proper explanation for that incident is given.

You had better change your user name then. But why would one incident put you off coming, even if the explanation that you state seems unlikely (and by the way, I don't remember seeing that explanation)? Those of us who live here permanently don't live in fear every day.

You can google. Yes that explanation was given multiple times. It was not one incident. As you are aware there were multiple unexplained deaths but that one incident stuck out more to me than the rest as 2 people died simultaneously.

As you said you live there permanently and have no fear. If all of sudden expats started dropping like flies I'm pretty sure some fear would kick in.

But they aren't, so we're not.

Kudos to you.

Im a tourist so personally it is concerning to me that there is no transparency or reasonable explanation brought forth by the Dominican Republic powers at be concerning the tourist deaths. That same consensus is shared by a great many potential visitors. In any case the decline in visiting tourists is already being felt as there is a shortage of hard currency in the DR.

The possibility of this upcoming high season failing is real. Unfortunately for some when the income is low crime is an option. Expats are always easy targets. But i'm not worried about you as you are fearless.

The same people that are concerned with the recent deaths and avoid travel to the D.R are the same people that think you can get the flu from a flu shot

If some people want to throw caution to the wind and visit D.R. more power to them.

Some people have more to lose than others.

There is nothing wrong to expect a proper explanation from the Dominican government after a slew of tourists are found dead in multiple resorts. The longer the Dominican Republic takes to release the HONEST explanation the deeper the hole will be to crawl out from.

They should take heed from Jamaica which is a much more violent and dangerous place to visit. Jamaica offers transparency and they are open to the world about their problems.

This being a public forum you are entitled to your opinion, but you understand of course, people might judge your opinions as well based on the validity of what your write. For example "Jamaica": The last time I went there the taxi driver drove us to the restaurant and told us he must wait for us. He had a machete a couple of feet long right at this side, sat and waited while we had dinner so that he could return us to the hotel.
"The longer it takes" theory: Nope, you have no data to support your in-depth research. In fact, I'm sure you believe that people in general have very SHORT memories about most things. They can't remember their wife's birthday, day they got married, who was the last Vice President, and on and on.
"The DR government explaining". When did you start believing what ANY government has to say? I hope you don't engage in that kind of foolish behavior. LOL. And beside which,
how many families planning a two week vacation, sitting in 8 feet of snow, are interested? Utter nonsense.
"Some people have more to lose..." Absolutely correct. Every crossroad in life is a choice. You have decided you're not coming back for vacation. OK. Do it my friend BUT please stop trying to convince others with your bait and click news articles the dangers of the DR. Please don't use this forum to try and instill fear in people that have NO fear. You know, 318 posts in the amount of time you have been a member here is about one post a week. That's less than the amount of information we get from the DR government that you so respect.
Go in peace. This will all work it self out and I for one will enjoy myself on the most beautiful beaches of the world.

as a point of 'catch up' -

are you aware that more Americans died in the DR in 2018 than did this year ?
There was nothing remarkable about this year's spate of deaths other than the press reporting

Agreed. Add in the woman beaten in Punta Cana and Big Poppi being shot, and it created a perfect storm.

They have choices:

PR = No infrastructure. like lights, roads emergency service.
Jamaica= Machete in taxis. Poor country people looking for gringos. AIs need to stay in that prison
Mexico= Do you need the stats o crime? And not exactly across the pond.
Bermuda= Spring and early fall only.
Virgin Islands= Lock the gates. Make the walls higher. Tons of crime
Boutique Islands= for the rich and famous. If not rich and famous next closest thing=Punta Cana
Fla USA = Winter month weather not guaranteed. Winter rates very high. No AIs.
Aruba= around about 2PM the winds come in so hard they will blow your swim suit off

Que mas?

Dominican republic == Play your cards right and hold them close to your chest. Put a little trumpism in your spirit. You have a winning hand no matter what they are saying about you.

I feel sorry for the people living in the cities and tourist areas as I like others hear these tales of problem. As a retired Canadian who has lived here in the country side for over 19 years I find the DR different than most. Security and safety no problem honesty also very high example Lost my wallet twice and had it returned and lost a pocket knife in a taxi and 8 months later the taxi driver seen me and returned it. I have to laugh as people in Canada ask what about my medical insurance well the doctors I know will ask me over the phone the problems my family has come out to my house with the medicine they think I might need and leave usually I have to stop him and give him money for fuel as he did not ask for anything. Love the DR
