Prostitution as with drugs and alcohol can't be successfully prohibited. Attempting to do so is just a waste of time and resources. So a location that wishes to protect its image needs to get the business off the streets into safe locations with onsite security.

The girls need to be licensed so the tax dept. can collect from them if it desires, customers can verify that the girl is regularly subjected to a health screening for hiv and other std and licensing provides an opportunity for intervention programs to counsel the girls before they hit the streets for the first time a legit sex workers.

I see nothing wrong with what Sosua is attempting to do, just how they are doing it. Like so many other places, the politicos can't get all in behind the world's oldest profession so anything they attempt to do is a half measure that doesn't really address most of the issues.

When has the Government addressed 1/2 the issues at anything let alone most....progress here is one step forward two back...

Sosúa demands changes necessary for its tourist repositioning

SOSÚA, Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic.- Different sectors of the Municipality of Sosúa met in a community meeting convened jointly by the Municipal City Council, the Economic and Social Council, the Ministry of Tourism and the Public Ministry to publicize recent and future measures aimed at changing the image and repositioning of this family tourist destination.

Andrés Pastoriza, coordinator of the Economic and Social Council of the Municipality of Sosúa (CESMS), spoke of the need to implement changes to attract family tourism that has moved away from this beautiful coastal city in recent years as a result of the negative image projected on the town.

Colonel Ignacio Peña Grullón, deputy general director of the Specialized Tourist Security Corps (CESTUR), announced, in turn, the strategy that has been carried out for the organization of the sector known as El Batey.

Jakaira Cid, North Regional Director of the Ministry of Tourism, spoke on the other hand about the actions that MITUR has recently taken to strengthen “the promising future that awaits Sosúa, once we implement the required changes,” the director noted.

The municipal mayor, Ilana Neumann de Azar, expressed her firm decision and commitment to promoting the necessary actions to achieve the objective of making Sosúa a prominent and attractive family tourist destination. The mayor stressed: “I will not restrain my efforts to return to Sosúa to the brightness that this community deserves.”

She thanked the Ministry of Tourism, the Public Ministry, CESTUR, and the National Police for the support received so far and said she trusted “that these institutions will continue to give us their support to achieve the desired objectives together.”
The meeting mentioned above was held at the Hotel Casa Marina in this city. It was attended by a broad audience and representatives of the leading local economic and social sectors, including members of the Edificio Council, business people, hoteliers, neighborhood councils, churches, education sector, sports groups, communicators, civil and military authorities.
The different topics discussed were widely debated and commented on by those present. It was clear that the vast majority are in favor of the changes already made and all yearn for a better future for this laborious community endowed with beautiful beaches and other natural resources."

I don't understand why many do not understand what is happening in Sosua.

I don't think they can eradicate prostitution but they're many Dominicans who rather take the 12,000 pesos a month and keep their dignity. Prostitution is legal in Spain and for a poor euro country (compared to other Euro countries) with high unemployment are not flooding the streets to sell their "wares" at three times the money they can make working as a cashier at El Corte Ingles. The "Five Year Plan" has to include the re-education of the populace and although you probably can't eradicate prostitution it will definitely hinder it. My opinion of course

Try spreading " dignity" on bread and see if it will feed a family. Further, these chicas are not ashamed of what they do, only the self righteous morality set who want to place thier own hang-ups on others are bothered.

I think I finally see what the Problem is here ...Some of the posters here think there is a difference between the Street Hoes, who are making "their town" LOOK bad , but attracting the dirty Mongers who" prey " on them..
and the girl who looks all innocent, working as a cashier , but it more than happy to go back to the Villa with the Gringo for some extra Pesos ..
Does not surprise me .. we are dealing with people who consider themselves " Romance Travelers".. who just happened to fall in Love with Fausto,, the "Dance Instructor" , and they have deluded themselves into thinking that this was LEGIT Romance , and the Money they are giving him is NOT payment for Sexual Services .
I can see how if you are that far deluded in your thinking , you also Might find a STRONG Urge to distance yourself from the "dirty dirty " open Street business which is defiling their Lovely little Romance and Drinking Hamlet of Sosua .

You see, their Companionship, is in better TASTE. so its just better .
just an observation ... not throwing stones ..

Do what makes you happy.
Sosua will be just FINE,, long after WE are ALL GONE and forgotten ..

Precisely!

If they had an alternative to prostitution to feed their families? Are you stating they won't take it? I don't believe that all or most Dominican women are whores. I believe due to the poor economy and lack of education hurts their culture. lower wages in Spain are appx. 900euros a month. They could easily double that in a week (prostitution), but they don't. Both countries are Catholic so we can leave religion out of it. Also, I don't see Dominicans in the US running around looking for a gringo. Why is that?

I have no dog in this fight. I am just brainstorming ways to improve the Dominican way of life. Just thoughts! No more No less. So please enough with the name calling and inferring about hang-ups and being a Romance Traveler! I want to engage in a decent conversation and if you and others can't handle it? Please Please ignore my posts.

Most live in Dominican majority hoods in the USA. Other Hispanic females and E. Asian women marry out 30%-40% of the time.

No name calling here. That's the morality warriors that talk down about men with young girls calling them "mongers" and calling the chicas "putas". Life is full of choices, I don't cast aspersions at life choices other people make and I would expect the same in return. However many think their way is the right way.

Mongers call themselves mongers.

Mongers call themselves mongers.

Some do, not all. Lonely men that travel here and spend a week or two with a young chica, wining and dining her are often looked at with scorn by certain segments of the community. Well they probably don't care and prefer their situation instead of a unhappily married man that has bought his family to hooker central because he is cash strapped and can't vacay in Bermuda or the Caymans

And filled to the brim with families enjoying the fine dining opportunities.
Churches overflowing on Sundays.
Oh, the joy of it all.

If they push a couple more bars to upper eastern PC, I think what you might see is a quick move to "mark" Pedro Clisante as newly won territory. If you remember the battle of the Pedro Clisante Street Closings, they had a few concerts, street vendor thingies and other stuff while closing off the street.

You saw people and Dom families at those concerts that you didn't normally see in town.

Watch for that 1st PC Concert. I vote for Monchy y Alexandra.

You make valid points. Some women take the easier and greater money because they can, I suppose.
Also, I don't see Dominicans in the US running around looking for a gringo. Why is that?

Because they are already in the promised land, which was the main reason to look for a gringo in the first place. Same thing Sankies do with Canadian Whales.

There isn't going to be an abolition of prostitution. Just a slight relocation in the aim of reducing visibility.

For those that think the government is doing something illegal by forcing bar only locations to relocate or close think of it this way. The city paints curbs yellow as an indication of where you cannot park . If you park there you will be towed and have to pay money to get your car back. It is legal to own a car, just not park it there based upon a regulation of the city. The city also decides where a bar location can exist. If a prostitute solicits in a region where they are not wanted, the city could fine them. People mention prostitutes have been "rounded up" for years. The prostitute might even have a court case against the city, but good luck winning it, it appears they have no luck winning yet after years of it happening. Some people don't like changes. They will argue how futile the changes are. Those Saviors of Sosua, the social justice warriors paying for the putas, will just have to go a bit further on up the road.

“just have to go a bit further on up the road” now I see the problem...most mongers haven’t seen their little fren in shower in yrs. Let alone expecting them to walk 1km down the rd. Maybe mayor should buy some golf carts like in airport to help transport .. we know obesity alcohol and bonner pills mixed with crocs kills ,be a great public service achievement and help
In future deaths of tourists...we know most seeking sin are on budget or there wouldn’t be 25 dollar a day hostiles for them..
Maybe we can start a gofundme campaign to help ease the burden of change ..
