It was not a ghost town, and certainly wasn't "eerie" unless you were standing inside the completely empty space formerly occupied by Bourbon Street Grill. Immediately out front of the old Bourbon St. the sidewalk was mostly occupied by casual pedestrians and patrons of the nearby shops and restaurants. GONE are the large groups of desprate whores, pimps, street hustlers, motoconchos, beggars etc. that normally congest this area as to make it an annoying stroll at best and dangerous at worst. Also gone was the endless line of motorbikes occupying every available inch of parking space on the south side of Pedro Clisante.

The restaurants were doing fine. I was there around 9:00pm and had dinner at Elefante Rosso which is about 30 meters west of the Merengue Bar/Classico Disco. Every table was full on the sidewalk area and inside only two tables were available when I sat down. And again I was pleasantly surprised at the recognizable change in the general area. Normally groups of three, four and five guys at a time would pass by, never stopping to eat or order food, but hurriedly and obnoxiously making their way to the bars and discos further down the street with the usual group of street hustlers in tow. Last night this was almost non existent. There was still street traffic with some of the usual suspects, after all several bars and all of the legitimate restaurants are open.

After dinner I sat down at Cafe Cubano for coffee. Again, no more of the constant hustle passing by while trying to enjoy my coffee and conversation. Speaking with the owners for a while, they were also glad to not have to deal with the constant stream of street hustlers, whores running from the police, pimps watching across the street as their "girls" enter and leave Merengue and Classico all night. Most of the nights work for the owners was attending to their clients in the cigar shop and not dealing with much of the filth that can spew into Cafe Cubano from the overflow in the area.

Most of the other restaurants in the area had a decent amount of customers including Schnitzel House, Schlemmer Stube, Aurora's Bistro, Jolly Roger, Central Cafe and a few others I can't remember the name's of.

So the simple answer to your question . . . no, it was neither a ghost town nor "eerie", actually it was quite relaxing.

Sorry to disappoint . . .

Wow.
How different a picture than the mongers were painting if the whores were not there in full regalia. Time will tell if this continues to be the case.

Get real. 90% of tourists travel to Sosua for one reason only. If not girls - they have the whole huge Florida to enjoy. With much better quality, sanitation, customer protection and safety. And with practically same prices.
To me it is very obvious.

Real? I understand what the DR government wants after following this story for years until it just came to a head. Is that real enough for you? The DR government does not care if another whore monger ever comes into the DR. That is what is real.

From SosuaOne on Facebook :

Update on Sosua:
Classicos, Merengue, Bourbon Street, Kings, Bar Central, Flow - all remain closed Friday night. We ate dinner at Shcnitzel Paradise (chocolate cake is amazing) across the street from the Cigar bar. The street was very quiet and it was actually possible to have a nice conversation. Not a single spandex sighing and the few guys we spotted looked extremely lost :) - Bourbon Street's space is completely empty, not even a broom. Flow/Pratinum was closed off with a tarp and rumor is that they cleared their building as well. Looks like these closures are going to stick. On the drive home we noticed a mob of at least thirty moto's gathered outside of Ahnvee Luxury Boutique Hotel. It doesn't take a genius to figure out where the has party moved to. - Happy Saturday

Oh but next week, or next month there will be much suffering and gnashing of teeth, increased crime, ect...Or not.

I wish I could predict the future, what happened this week was announced long ago. No predictions needed on that.

We received some more information last night about the closings.

A resolution was passed back on October 30th 2018 by the City of Sosua - Resolution No. 09-2018. Rough translation : The resolution reclassifies sections of Pedro Clisante into commercial, residential, mixed use and entertainment zones.

The obvious intent is to move the higher profile entertainment establishments down to the newly zoned “entertainment district” which is on the Playa Chiquita end of Pedro Clisante. The effected businesses were giving one year to relocate. Obviously the one year grace period expired on Oct 30th 2019.

The forced closings was ordered by the Attorney General's Office in Santo Domingo, in coordination with the Attorney General of the Puerto Plata province and the Municipal Municipality of Sosúa. Obviously the city has the full support of the government to enforce the new ordinance.

As of 11:00pm last night - The closures were still in effect. City Lights was busy moving furniture and fixtures into the High Caribbean building, they plan on being open tonight. Bourbon Street has moved to the Ahnvee Resort. Pratinum/Flow appears to have removed all of their tables and fixtures from their building. The owner of Kings is appealing the closure of his business and hopes to reopen this weekend.

However, a source from the City Council of Sosúa confirmed that more than a year and 5 months ago the owners of the bars were notified of the aforementioned resolution and according to the inspectors of the town hall only one of the offenders showed intention to apply to the municipal ordinance .

However, several employees of the closed bars complained about the outrageous way in which they were evicted from these night businesses even with the presence of several tourists who had a bad time.

Just shortly after 10:00pm last night, police and military personal began the forced closure of several bars and restaurants along the infamous Pedro Clisante strip downtown Sosua. Employees and management were instructed to clear their establishments of clients and close their doors. After doing so chains and notices were then attached to each of the business entrances.

The Closed List:

IMG_7610.jpeg
City Lights, Chez Montreal, Platinum, Kings, Bourbon Street, Flame, Hotel Bar Central, Merengue and Classicos.

None of this should be a surprise. This has been brewing for well over a year when Sosua’s mayor outlined her future vision for the city and issued an ordinance change for the downtown district. At that time a written notice was provided to most of these businesses. There have also been several public and private meetings discussing the issue of the downtown night clubs. If you haven’t been following along, the city is attempting to move the late night activates down towards the new entertainment district in Playa Chiquita. Unfortunately its not quite finished. Couple all of this with the new construction and development dollars flowing in and things were bound to change.

What does this mean for locals and expats? On a selfish note, not having Kings open is going to put a damper on our weekend football viewing, rats! But on the bright side the rest of our favorite bars downtown are still open including the Jolly Roger, Flip Flops and Checkpoint. Plus Matteo is getting ready to open his new spot in the former Brittanica.

Bourbon Street has officially moved down to Ahnvee Resort (same owner).
BOURBON STREET HAS OFFICIALLY MOVED DOWN TO AHNVEE RESORT (SAME OWNER).

What does this mean for the solo male traveler? First off, don’t go canceling your plane tickets. The beach is still here and so are the girls. A short cab/moto ride down the street to High Caribbean (we have a hunch it will be open tonight), Casino Playa Chiquita, or SkyBox Nightclub at Ahnvee and you’ll find what your looking for. Construction on the new entertainment complex was already clipping along fairly rapidly, and it’s safe to assume they will have a few extra hammers pounding away today.

Remember where we are, it is anyones guess whether or not this is permanent or how long this closure will last…. The fact that the military was involved speaks volumes about how much support this action carried at the national level. Still, it wouldn’t surprise us at all if everyone is back open tonight. We’ll keep updating as this story progresses.

It's amazing what a few greased palms high enough up will do. All in all, Ahnvee did an amazing job.

Scientologists have a lot of money. Maybe even enough to build Dream City.

They finally nailed that "Active Adults" them at Ahnvee.

Has anyone seen a guarantee or ordinance that specifically allows a 'tolerance zone' at the top end?
They could just decide to close that down if the whim takes them.

Also,I believe that this is private money and enterprise.Nothing to do with the city hall.
Anyone got further info?

They do a very good job at making it appear that way.
I have stayed there many times going back 12 years, know many many girls that have worked there and currently work there and I am personal friends with one of the managers,I know for a fact they do not get a cut from the girls, the girls pay the mamasans only and the mamasans don't work for Blackbeard's either. They would not have survived all this time otherwise.

...Horizontal refreshment will always be available in Sosua...

Lol, indeed. Not long ago peeps were reporting here that Ahnvee was the next step in transforming Sosua into a international destination, attracting monied travelers from the U.S and Europe. It was such a super cool concept it would attract ultra chic fashionistas. LOL, now it has morphed into a lowly Hoe'tel full of chicas and dudes pumped up on testosterone, blue pills and liquor, lol, oh the transformation.

It was a manager that handed me the book of pictures when I arrived, told me to pick one and start my stay out right. All I know is the mamasan was in the same office that I paid my bill for my room. I don't want to argue, you seem to know more about the workings. I only stayed the one time for 2 weeks back in 2005.
