The accepted category these days for countries like the DR is middle-income. The DR is classified as upper-middle-income. 'Second world' is more or less obsolete because it originally meant the Eastern bloc countries pre-1989. So First and Third World are also falling out of use and are too simplistic a way to categorise the rich and poor countries, as are binary terms like developing/developed countries, or North/South.

To whom?
Revising the state of the global situation works for some, not all.
This simplistic approach to global affairs is what is causing global constipation.
We are not all ready to be a part of the new world order, and receive clipper cuts.
Sorry.

I was pointing out the definitions in use nowadays, which have replaced the obsolete first, second and third world labels.

It is also imperfect. China is indeed in a different economic, social and political league, together with other emerging giants like India, Brazil and Russia:

But this is a digression from the topic of the thread so let's leave it at that.

This is an insane comment to state that the DR is NOT a 3rd world country.

Do you want primary sources to put your insane comment to rest? I can have you speak to many Dominicans who are hungry and borderline starving.

They do not eat on a daily basis and were it not for the support of donations which are sporadic by nature they would have physically starved.

Do you want to speak to them so you can stop lying about the truth concerning the DR? I'll provide you with numbers if you so wish.

I can say the same about the USA. The country that also currently holds the rule for the most homeless. Some of you adults truly have the mental fortitude of teenagers and children. You can’t think past the first thought that pops into your head. What a joke. Lmfao

You can easily look up the information. The DR is known as an upper middle class (income) country.

Now, go read a book and practice using logic instead of your feeling and assumptions. Pathetic.

Canada is looking to extend the closure of the border with the US for another month through June 21. It seems likely the DR government will act in a similar way.

I hope not. Only thing keeping me positive is that I’m a legal resident not a tourist. Hoping that allows the DR to open to us at least. I know financially they’re really roughing it down there. I mean the average person. Lots of people now are skirting around the law to make some money some how

Where's Robert's yawning fox when you need it. My bad for splitting hairs over the 'second world' comment.

My friends have we been in the DR for over 19 years. They are permanent residents. Not citizens. The airport in the Dominican said that they would be allowed to enter the country. But after they arrived they were not allowed to get off the plane by a policeman waiting at the door of My friend and I have been keeping in contact over the past month about both of us returning to the Dominican. I am a temporary resident.

Why does denial of entry surprise anyone? Despite paperwork stating you are residents or even citizens, most Dominicans would not consider you as such.

You are neither jus sanguinis or jus solis. You have no genetic connection to the DR unlike the rest of us. So don't be upset or surprised by denial of entry.

In a time of national emergency consider it the least of the possible worst outcomes. Your properties and businesses were not confiscated. Right?

In the final tally, you are all foreigners despite paperwork stating otherwise. This is applicable to all not only the Haitians. Not my opinion but the general consensus of the Dominican population.

I do not know of anyone here in the DR who does not eat on a daily basis and unlike you, I live here.

14 posts here within the Premier League.....Who are you?
Maybe it's time for you to go back to washing some bricks.
Are you the posts count keeper in the "Premier League"? What is the Premier League anyway? Must be the equivalent to the word "essential" in the current pandemic state. Have to be here long hours and over time.....

I think you misunderstood the thread. We are not surprised or upset at the governments decision to close the borders. If they feel they need to keep EVERYONE out, including citizens, that’s understandable. But the government was never clear on who can return and who can’t. The local police at the airport also are not sure what to do in every situation. It would be just nice to hear from someone of ultimate authority to give a clear concise statement so that everyone, both the one traveling and the one allowing them in or not is on the same page. I don’t think of myself as being Dominican though I have lived there for 9 years and have volunteered my time and money to help the Dominican people. I have nothing to get out of this financially or materially by returning. I just love helping my fellow man and the Dominican has become home to me

Why the local police got involved with international travel is beyond me. The DR government can not keep travel closed for an extended period of time. They need to open up and attract once again the tourists who help stabilize the exchange rate.

They should never have closed in the first place. The opening and closing of International travel should have been left to the 1st world nations. The DR would have continued to benefit from hard currencies without government sponsored restrictions.

You would have entered without cause as so many others wanted to. Entering and leaving at will dependent on restrictions placed by other countries and not the DR.

Don't sell us short. We will get the call from the US about when they want us to open long before the DR gets notified.
Actually the need to keep the US-Canada border closed is more a Canadian need. We’re opening up everywhere. Factories, Provincial and National parks, malls in major cities, hospitals are gearing up for elective surgeries, schools are opening in certain provinces. Our overall virus numbers are good. The states with the highest number of infections and deaths, New York, New Jersey and Connecticut are relatively close to the Canadian border. Their numbers are declining but still pose a risk for non-essential border travel. The fact that we are doing so well may give us access to the DR quickly once the DR government gives the okay.
