Surreal conversation with AA today.

Sometime between yesterday my STI-MIA mysteriously disappeared on my flight tracker thingy.
So i call them.
Well, the flight is cancelled, they tell me. But no fear your onward connections are flying....... 😑😑 .
And how the hell do you expect me to be in MIA to catch that fly ?
Well other airlines like jetblue may be flying.......unbelievable.

I sincerely doubt that the Dominican government will open it's borders by June 4th. AA is just happy that somebody is buying tickets before they go out of business.

I am not buying, ticket was bought a year ago..... it is the return leg of the journey.

Actually the need to keep the US-Canada border closed is more a Canadian need. We’re opening up everywhere. Factories, Provincial and National parks, malls in major cities, hospitals are gearing up for elective surgeries, schools are opening in certain provinces. Our overall virus numbers are good. The states with the highest number of infections and deaths, New York, New Jersey and Connecticut are relatively close to the Canadian border. Their numbers are declining but still pose a risk for non-essential border travel. The fact that we are doing so well may give us access to the DR quickly once the DR government gives the okay.
I read the Dominican newspaper El Nacional today. The Dominican government is currently concentrating on sanitizing many localities with high rate of coronavirus. They have issues that are much more important than having a bunch of tourists enter the country and bring in more coronavirus. I suspect that the borders will remain closed until mid August at the earliest.

Speaking of travel: Got an email today from Jet Blue Mosaic program (Free bags, changes etc.) Gave me ,with only 4 months into the year , Mosaic status thru 2021.
I think they are doing everything in their power to retain loyal customers and get new business.

Why the local police got involved with international travel is beyond me. The DR government can not keep travel closed for an extended period of time. They need to open up and attract once again the tourists who help stabilize the exchange rate.

They should never have closed in the first place. The opening and closing of International travel should have been left to the 1st world nations. The DR would have continued to benefit from hard currencies without government sponsored restrictions.

You would have entered without cause as so many others wanted to. Entering and leaving at will dependent on restrictions placed by other countries and not the DR.
Then we would have had even more infected Italians here.

The Quebec border was closed - may still be

The bulk of the Cdn population resides near the border - Ontario & Quebec

US & Canada seem to have no trouble agreeing to keep it closed
It was closed initially by joint agreement

Essential goods are crossing the border via trucks and rail. Canadians used to crossing to buy cheaper gas are now getting that in Canada. Can’t speak to what is happening with US citizens crossing into Canada to buy cheaper drugs, insulin, etc. A few bus loads came across just before the border closure. I’m still checking WestJet weekly. They keep pushing back their Toronto-POP departures. Was first week of June, now first week of July. Even if it’s the first week of August, I think they will get enough bookings to justify a few flights a week. People may choose to stay in Air B and B condos and apartments instead of resorts but they will come once the airports are open. I certainly would. Hope your daughter finally got out.

Actually our province is closed to non residents including non residents with summer homes for the time being. Our tourism industry will take a massive hit if that continues beyond June. Our two National parks get large numbers of bus tours and International visitors, as do iceberg and whale watching tours. Cruise ships are banned as well. We average about 10 to 15 cruise ship visits annually.

Canada seems to be doing well.....
Trudeau is giving anyone getting their Canadian Old Age Pension an extra one time payment of $300. An extra $200 if your eligible for the GST rebate Bill. That’s a big chunk of change added to already big chunk of federal money handed out during the pandemic. Mourneau, our finance minister, said they are not thinking about raising taxes now to pay for the pandemic bail out funds. He said that with a straight face.
