Impeccable timing.

Depart the Dominican Republic as campaigning ends and before the elections were held last Sunday. Just as airports start receiving flights and the DR opens to tourism which is right now almost 100% from the worlds MOST INFECTED COUNTRY and from the world's MOST INFECTED CITY.

Planes arriving here with who knows how many asymptomatic contagious passengers for whom these ridiculous, randomly administered temperature checks which mean absolutely nothing, are then processing through immigration and customs with almost zero social distancing and collecting their luggage in areas with even less. To head out and mix with a population whose steady increase in the daily infected rate as well as the increase in daily death rate is exponentially higher than when they initially closed the country to tourism and is STILL INCREASING.

WELL PLAYED ! ! !
And this is understated!

Silver lining, why be so negative, go out and enjoy life, believe the covid number explosion Charlottes incoming in 3......2......1..........

Sadly--- for the DR---- it is on the list of the EU for quarantine when you travel back home. Starting monday the 6th.

Nobody is coming from europe for a vacation knowing they will have to self isolate for 10 to 15 days when they get home.

Furthermore embassies ( FR, UK and CH ) were quite clear on the phone yesterday : DO NOT travel to the DR.
I can only see the DR really getting tourism from the US right now. Not sure how it works with Canada.

I see many home owners coming and the long term stayers but not the traditional tourists in high numbers

But I think you would agree the incentive is high for home owners and long term (year round like me) to come "home". On the other hand it's a bit early for tourists especially given that fact that the NE USA is sweltering in the heat right now. And the "Dominican Sun" feels richer and sweeter to the North American starting in November. They'll be back soon enough. Covid, scmovid, who likes ice, biting wind, and snow packed roads? There's a place for them.

Whether tourists arrive will depend on how hotels manage sanitation. If people get sick at the hotels no one will come. If they don't get sick, they will come. They will not go outside the resort though. Things are very loose in non-tourist locations. Close contact and frequently no masks. Again, the next few weeks should tell the story.

Tourist hotels that are open now have only about 10 percent occupancy at the moment. But, as j says, it is early.

Also the number of hotels open for tour operators to book people into will play a big factor as well as price.

I think it will be the same as Mexico, where local tourists will visit the resorts for the time being

The UK will be sending tourists in October/November
I am beginning to doubt that. The tracking we hear they have started in the UK of people in quarantine and the DR seeing a spike now in July soon going into August. The overwhelmed DR health care system.

What is your guess ? Do you think they will go in lockdown again and close border again ?

Based on the reports coming out of the Cibao...........there will probably some sort of re-implementation concerning a lock down.

Yeah that is what they are advertising, but likely Tui will cancel if things are not under control

Growing calls from medical profession for curfews and this one seems to have traction to close up shop at weekends 24 hours.

The National Health Coordinator (Conasalud) calls on the Dominican authorities to decree a state of emergency and a closed quarantine that includes the entire weekend, due to the impact of COVID-19.

"We call on the acting President, Danilo Medina, and the recently elected, Luis Abinader, to agree and decree a state of emergency and a closed quarantine with a curfew on weekends from Friday at 5: 00 pm until Monday at 5:00 am, for 15 days, ”demanded the representative of the National Union of Nursing Services (Unased), Sol Amantina Delgado.
