The money spent by illegal overstayers has the same economic impact as the money spent by” legal”, tourists. That’s an inescapable fact and made more important by the devastation to tourism caused by Covid. The new President and his Tourism Minister be fools to tamper with the migration tourism status quo. They are riding a popularity wave with their new approach to government spending and anti corruption initiatives. Jeopardizing any source of revenue would diminish that. Future better economic times may lead to a different overstayer approach. Possibly something more positive and conducive to longer stays.
Oh well, The PLD ignoring the rule of law to make money was the original intent of the extra legal overstay fees.
The new PRD government said they would actually enforce the laws they wrote back in 2003 before the PLD started their campaign of illegal actions.

The amount of money spent by tourists who overstay and the economic impact on the DR is insignificant compared to what legal tourists spend. The amount of money that DGM collects in overstay fees, relative to it's budget, is another story.
It’s the welcoming attitude that makes or breaks a place...let’s see how much money is in coffers with much less corruption..

The new one line request for an extension of stay up to 120 days "legally" is anything but "legal", so there is still hope for your being in the DR.

You keep missing the point I’m afraid ...as long as government made the 120 day extension , we are legally allowed to stay with in country and drive and play bumper cars with out worry your 1800 number will deport us... I know you have been waiting for gringo round up 2.1 but sadly it doesn’t look good sorry 🍿

I am not missing any points here. I have actually read the laws on these topics. Here are two points some people don't like to get:

1) The ability to extend a tourist card beyond 30 days is not covered by any DR laws. After 30 days, the actual laws state you are an illegal alien.

2) Drivers licenses are covered by a different government agency and are valid for 90 days. NOT 120 DAYS.

I agree. Whether or not this extension makes you technically "legal" in the country, the government is telling you in so many words that they will never charge you for being in the country illegally.

Another point is, if one is ever considering becoming a legal resident here, this is the way to go. Paying the overstay fee when you leave might very well count against you if you do decide to become a resident. Why look a gift horse in the mouth?

Technically, a person staying over 30 days on a tourist card is ILLEGAL. A regulation not based in laws does not change this FACT.

I agree, but the department in charge of enforcing the law has basically said they will not enforce the law, so the point is moot. And Abinader has basically given this his blessing.

There are a lot of laws still on the books in the US that are never enforced.

I cannot disagree. That is how governments work, say one thing and do another.

Not one travel advisory site introduces the word" illegal" Not one, if fact one of the largest sites COMMENDS the DR in changing the regulations. This site actually answers a question to a poster and states" you are totally legal with an extension of your time". Every site is positive and presents an entire different picture Winde that you continue to paint. May I ask, what horse do you have in this race and what makes you so certain that whatever you post is the correct interpetation of the standing laws? Even if you were to have a scholar of the law support your continuous rants about the "law" here on DR1 what would that prove? This is the way it is being interpeted by all persons in authority at the present time. Be it good for tourism or not, IT IS the way the "law" is enforced currently.

AKA = boredom.
Boredom = The state of feeling disinterested in one's surroundings, having nothing to do, or feeling that life is dull.

Where can I find the new entry procedures which are being introduced that replace the hand-written
entry forms. I understand that they require filling out an online form.
I arrived yesterday to SDQ from New York. ( Dec 7, 2020) They give you form on the plane that basically states that you have not been exposed or have symptoms. You give this form to immigration officer. They also have machines that check your temperature upon entry to the airport.
Also, please keep in mind if you arrive within curfew hours you might not think ahead of how you will be getting to your destination from the airport. Taxis are operating as normal but UBER won't take you.

Show me one government then hasn’t done that ? one government I know has over 20000 lies in its term ... it’s nice to see a president trying to buy himself into heaven for once instead of mansion...give him chance I’m sure it’s on list somewhere in mean time🍻🍻

In reality..... the overstay charges/fees are illegal.... initiated by the prior regime
Written NOWHERE in the laws

The new guys are determined to right the ship....
They are the ones who wrote the proper laws
WW you are absolutly right, not legal.... but on the other side of the coin..how many people in this country pay any attention to laws?

I have learned not to bet on anything here (or anywhere else, except on myself).

I do expect more changes after CV19 restrictions are relaxed some time in 2022.
yes its great that the D.R. is getting the English vaccine, that the English would not use.........
