Okay, seriously, scrap what I wrote earlier. DON'T GO THERE! The conditions of the road are fine, it's just painstakingly slow. It literally took my wife 2.5 hours to go from where the diversion starts until reaching Montellano, and now she's on her way back from there.
It was backed up all the way to the Base from L & R hardware and it was a double line of cars and trucks because Dominicans just can't show patience.
My advice is be patient.
I believe the bridge will be open Sunday.
Hopefully only to two axles. No trucks, no busses, no Limos.
And they have added those yellow glue down rumble buttons on each side of the bridge to reduce wheel impact.
What is now making it worse is some people on the Montellano side are parking their cars and leaving them for the day and taking taxis to Sosua leaving the shoulders blocked for 200 yards West of the bridged

Yepp and my wife just got back now, and she told me among other things, that the trucks they are using to "rebuild" that road is those old useless that break down all the time. So one of them had broken down on the road, and somehow they managed to get someone to tow that away (as I wasn't there I cannot understand how it was possible) and also people crashing into each other, and one lady whos car broke down but didn't bother doing anything about it, so it was chaos. And yes, actually 3 lines of cars from the entrance to the gas station, as already mentioned, Dominicans don't understand that it cause even more congestion when trying to block the way for others. Interesting though that all the military/DIGISETT/Police presence doesn't change anything, maybe they like watching chaos unfold in front of their eyes.

I think they realize the detour is a disaster and will not work and damages the economy, is dangerous and destructive to cars.
I even think the bridge could be opened for light trucks like the smaller Hyundai and Daihatsu even small buses.
Just not those overweight dirt and rock haulers or largest buses or beer trucks or eny truck hauling equipment. Not the overloaded beach buses from Santiago
That bridge is not falling down for 20 more years.
One thing to note - there is a water main suspended below the bridge which will need to be closed if the bridge is replaced in the same spot.

I just came up from Tamboril to Sabaneta. It was grueling and busier than normal I picked lunchtime so that there would be less heavy equipment.

Let's not forget the disruption to commerce which we will all feel one way or another.

Truck/delivery traffic is seriously affected..... supermarket deliveries, etc.

In the construction world, one of the largest (if not THE largest) development projects here in Cabrera/RSJ gets it's cement from Pto Plata.
I have seen strings of trucks - 5-6 at a time - making the trek.
They're not so dependable these days.

Let's be glad this is a temporary glitch - the bridge- not a more permanent one like the container shipping debacle

Well the bridge is supposed to be restricted to light duty vehicles so cement trucks likely would not qualify even after it is opened.

I saw photos where they are reinforcing the bridge from below with a large footing dug and perhaps another column or maybe they are reinforcing an abutment. I only saw photos of the footing
This could be an error, because whatever concrete they pour may be in the way of a replacement bridge years down the road.

Also superstructure truss bridges are designed not to have support from below except at certain points, and members are designed to resist tension or compressions or sway and a misplaced support could transfer load with untended consequences, like failing a beam, stringer or column or a complete buckling.

But I will make a bet - that within one month all traffic will be allowed back on the bridge regardless of weight.

I lived in DR most of life, just trying to recall last time I saw a sign warning commercial vehicles about weight capacity or high clearances...

Here in the US a CDL like me have to aware of that all time if not you fail the driving test.

And know your height restrictions too
One thing I noticed when inspecting the Cangrejo bridge is that the Portal Bracing on the West Side is bent inwards, having been struck by something very high, like a crane or concrete pumper truck. I did not see the repair crew addressing that and while it is still intact it definitely is not in prime condition.

President Balaguer was a man focused in the future, he started the construction of a new road from Pto. Pta. to Sosua back in 1990s but next government forgot about it, you still can see the abandoned bridge or bypass foundation between Monte llano and Cangrejo.
Now we are paying the consequences of bad presidents.

Yes President Balaguer have a huge project for province San Felipe but couldn't completed, a Malecón starting in Luperón connecting to the existing one in Ciudad PP and going thru all those sugar field between PP and Sosua.

Leonel is original from SD he was more interested in the Capital and endorsed his People to develope the East side of the island.

By any chance did they also repair the sidewalks that looked like Swiss cheese from all the holes from rust?
