On FB : as of 4 pm today there is 1 lane open on the bridge for traffic going in the direction TO PUERTO PLATA.

Can't wait to see some Yahoo trying to go in the other direction : "I'm too important to use the detour"

Don't be too quick to slam the DR engineering....
That bridge has lasted a respectable amount of time.

Other countries have bigger bridge problems =

I would venture to make a bet that bridge was a standard off the shelf truss design from the US.
It might have been fabbed up in DR but even then it could have all be shipped in once the abutment span distance was known

I'm not slamming the DR engineering - nor the response to the logistical nightmare of re-routing traffic and of upgrading the detour. They have done a wonderful job.
They have done a pretty fantastic job in my opinion. In spite of the sometimes maniacal and "entitled" drivers encountered there in the last 2 weeks.

I couldn't agree more with Astucia. Just wait until the bridge is open for 2 axle vehicles and then the trucks and buses believe it's their right also.
Who is going to turn them around and send them back ? Chaos descends !!

I am coming from Santiago to Cabarete today. Is the bridge open for a motorbike?
The post on FB said they were allowing limited traffic, in one lane, in the direction TO Puerta Plata only. So it would seem the detour would be used for all traffic going to Sosua.

I will be able to give you an accurate update in a few hours as I will travelling that way shortly , however I do know for certain that they are allowing light limited traffic ( one way atleast ) as of 2 days ago.
When I personally crossed over on Tuesday , I was still at the mercy of taking a guagua from POP to foot of Congrejo bridge and than having to walk across and catch another to Sosua and the same to return
so stay tuned for an update..
But as usual , nothing in this country is a potential problem until it becomes an immediate, urgent dilema and the poor pre planning think tank emergency response strategists find themselves sitting around the Dominoe table sipping Brugal debating the best course of action.
As far as thé alternative route I would say forget it unless one has a dire emergency as it too is on the verge of becoming rowboat crossng only .
The positive is the timing could not be better coinciding with the Airport closure as to reduce what could have been a Cat 5 traffic nightmare as opposed to a Cat 1.

Let's watch the taxis
If they think it is worthwhile to drive over the bridge one way then comeback on the car-destroying and long delays via the detour then maybe the detour is better.
My guess is they don't want to tear up their Sonatas and Corollas and neither should you
Ask the cost of a new catalytic convertor replacement and you might reconsider

Was it green enough?
Did they use recycable materials?

Bridge is open for light vehicles (minivans count as light) to cross from the Sosua side towards Sosua, from early in the morning to 9pm (this time I can confirm as of last night)
If you get there after 9pm you will have to take the detour which is not that bad in dry conditions but narrow and will be a nightmare when it rains. Also from the POP side to Sosua you will have to use the detour.

This info is from experience at 9.15pm last night and 7.30 am this morning

So I just crossed the bridge 5 minutes ago..They are only allowing LIGHT vehicles and traffic one way from Sosua to POP to cross one lane but for some reason not allowing them to return except by the alternative route...People using public transport still have to cross by foot and switch vehicles and no motos can cross either ( unless private ) but they may not let all cross...
Why they are not just taking turns from both sides for people to return is beyond me.

This bridge is older than Trujillos grandmother and perhaps for those times it was more than " good enough " and no doubt the original developers nor govt at the time ever anticipated the boom of tourism that would eventually emerge and how vital this one little crossing the size of a football field would be...
Whats pathetic is not the inévitable collapse of the structure but the lack of forsight , neglect and allocating of proper funds to maintain or similtaneously construct a new bridge and alternative route that coincides with and supports the onslaught of perpetual development as they are now forced to do at the expense of thier heroic tourism revival bugle blowing .
Collado and friends are the brainchild of the D.Rs epic climb to the top of the tourism peak but clueless when it comes to supporting it...
A real wake up call ! Geez if this area of the country ever gets whacked by a major hurricane the devastation would be unthinkable.

I think it's because they know that would cause long lines on either side of the bridge waiting for their turn to cross and they know Dominicans have no respect for lines or waiting their turn. Very soon you would drivers on both sides jumping the line and the inevitable traffic jam. Much better to let one side to cross the bridge uninterrupted and make the other side take the detour.
