Oh well I guess it depends on which brand you buy, because I've sometimes bought Nata that has a kind of weird sweetness to it. I'm just using milk and lemon juice as a substitute for buttermilk.
I buy it from the people that make queso de hoja here. They put it in those red rock soda bottles. it's fresh and warm - the Doms eat it with viveres for dinner. it stays forever in the fridge. In Cab there is the queseria La Zarina.

But isn't that called Whey?

From what I understand Buttermilk is the liquid that is left after churning butter, and the liquid you get after doing cheese is called whey, similar, but still not Buttermilk.

I’m out of the country this month and am trying to catch up on things we don’t get in Rep Dom

Scallops, skirt steak… the new ‘non beef’ products….. baby back ribs (although I get good ribs in Sto Dom)
Halibut, salmon…..

I have mentioned before that the Rep Dom diet/food has reduced my cholesterol count….
at a time in life when it should be going up

The local diet is good if you eat the right things…. Bad If you don’t

Is it possible to buy non-radiated milk anywhere?

Straight from a dairy or pasteurized would be okay. North coast.

Nata is Buttermilk. Idk Kricke, that's what I use it for. It is a think creamy liquid, it is not whey brother. Delicious. A villa chef here told me where to get it years ago. Go with what you know in cooking, sir

People in Jarabacoa pick it up directly from the Lechero , where the farmers drop of their milk before a tank truck comes to take it to the dairy.

I get farm fresh pork.
I know the farmer and exactly how the animals are raised and I buy it imported from the United States of America mostly.
I also stay away from the fried cheese and salami.

I find it much easier to keep my weight down here in the Dominican Republic than eating in my country of origin.
The meat is raised in a more natural fashion.
Food here is fresh.
The supply chain is short.
Less fast food and processed food temptations.
And as others have mentioned you just have to watch how your food is prepared.

"fresh" ? not the eggs, "Ham" you better eat it quick. "Beef
Fresh eggs> find a friend with a farm = delicious
Ham > Citterrio imported Boiled Ham or Campo Frio = best compromise
Beef > need to dry in just-above freezing-for 1-2 weeks. OR Imported Angus (Playero, Janets, Nacional, Bravo.) Tony Fish in POP has the largest selections of imported beef in large quantities ie if you're in the service industry

Left out Price Smart, also good imported beef selections. Ribs and Pork Loins as well

I eat Dominican rib eyes and filets at least once a week.
I dry brine them for 30 minutes
Sear in my cast iron skillet.
Medium rare/Medium
Straight rocks 😋

Now I have to admit that the imported Angus flat stake from Bravo pretty much beats the pants off of any cut of Dominican steak.
But I can't afford to eat that all the time.
PriceSmart has good pork and chicken and a beef cut that I like.

Like I have said before...if you want the best freshest food available...make a farmer your friend.
Very easy to do here in the Dominican Republic.
All meat and produce that I eat that comes out of campo tastes better than what I buy out of the store.

The best Dominican beef I have ever prepared is filet. I buy the entire piece and cut it myself into steaks. The not-so-nice parts get cubed and used for fajitas, stir fries or cheesesteak nachos.

A couple of random opinions:

JUMBO/Nacional has the absolute best freshly squeezed orange juice. Usually found in the deli section. I'm not sure where their oranges come from, but every time I drink that juice I close my eyes and I'm back home in Florida where my mother used to squeeze it fresh oranges from a tree in our back yard.

When they have them, JUMBO's ribs are just as good if not better than roadside lechon places. Their roasted chickens aren't bad either.
Before COVID they used to prepare a huge pot of Paella every Sunday; Now they hardly ever have it.

The roast chicken at PROVOCON with wasakaka is some of the best I've had. Gotta make sure you buy it early before they roast the living daylights out of it. The PROVOCON in Haina has a buffet every day and almost everything they have is delicious.

BRAVO has the best freshly baked brownies from a bakery called BOCADO Gourmet. They have them with and without walnuts. Betcha can't eat just one. Check the dates so you get the freshest ones. Super good, easily the best I've had on the island.

I can't convince Sirena to stock Cottage Cheese. JUMBO has it occasionally, but the only go-to place for sure is Pricesmart.
