I don't know if they are here to stay. As they become 10 years old with little value left because the batteries are kaput & people will compare them to a 10-year old Camry with 130,000 miles which could provide another 100,000 miles of service.
Once hydrogen fuel cells become reality EVs will become a historical failure.
Well, if you do a quick auction comparison, a 10 year old Camry is worth roughly $7,500 USD and 10 year old Tesla is worth $12,000 USD.

Fuel cell technology has been around for a long time and still has not reached critical commercial viability. Hyundai, Toyota and Honda have all built fuel cell cars.........and there is little to no acceptance from the buying public.........anywhere on the planet.

I think there will be a mixture of both in the future... Kind of like what has happened throughout human history... Something is developed, then something else comes along and pushes it aside... Not completely, but away from the priority that it had.

I remember back in the early 2000s when people in the advertising/marketing world were declaring that print was dead... And yet, here we are, twenty years later, with magazines and newspapers still being produced. I was often ridiculed for pointing out that touch is one of our five senses, but in the hullabaloo of the internet boom, not many grasped what I was getting at.

I do know people here in Austin who bought into the whole must-have-an-EV car song and dance... Who are now wondering what to do with their car that needs a new battery, which costs thousands — even tens of thousands — to replace.

Me... I grew up in an environment where cars were kept for as long as they could get you to where you wanted to go... And when they couldn't, you saved on new-car appreciation and bought second-hand.

Remember Steam cars? Battery cars were built before, in the early 1900s but were replaced by ICE vehicles.
There was a recent restoration of an old EV on Chasing Classic Cars but they had to adapt it to more modern batteries and charger kind of ruining the 'restoration'.
Sure EVs will be around a while but I expect them to fade like the Edsel

The 2014 Tesla cost more than 2X the 2014 Camry new at the dealership.
Correct.

My post was in response to "As they (Tesla's) become 10 years old with little value left because the batteries are kaput"

And because they have fewer moving parts they will probably outlast most ice vehicles.

Even beyond that technology will reduce the cost of the batteries and improve their longevity.

Finally, one of the biggest financial players in the east is supporting EV's in the DR.

You have owned a Tesla? My best friend is leasing one (her lease is almost up) and she has had nothing but problems. Mostly software but wipers quit working as have both front drivers windows and the brake lights and seat belt warning beeper that won't go off. She longs to have her Camry back

I bet it is disaster to get it fixed when needed. Hard enough to find good mechanics here, but this is a NIGHTMARE................

Playa - Where do you find a 10-year old Camry for that price?
I have been shopping for them in the US for the past 2 months and you can't touch one (other than salvage titles) for less than about $13K and that's with 130,000 miles.
Slow MO - Did you mean to say 2024?

No But I have bought/brought dozens of Nissan Leafs for a tourist project in the DR.

I too prefer my ice vehicle, but some people want electric.

From my post above, "Well, if you do a quick auction comparison"

....Manheim....one of the largest players in the US.

And 130,000 miles for a 10 yer old vehicle is average and it is what you are most likely to find.

On Carfax the cheapest 2014 Camry with less than 230,000 miles is $11,500.
The prices for Manheim is for dealers. A couple times a year they do hold public auctions but you can not drive the cars listed before bidding, so few normal people looking for a car for themselves buy from them.

My comparison is to what dealers would pay for something. They vote with their dollars everyday. My point was/is they (Tesla) have far more than "little value" after ten years.

Might I suggest you try CarGurus.com;

Pivoting back, it will be quite interesting to see how values hold up for EV's in the DR.......especially for all those Chinese models.

Take one look at FB Marketplace now and see how many fairly new vehicles you see for sale for parts, missing an engine, bad transmission, etc.
I'm guessing Marketplace will have more than a few within the next 3-4 years.

I'm old, but not so old as to remember steam cars :) . . . I am aware of them though... Convenient technology was the problem, but EVs today are a bit more comparable to other types... Jay Leno loves them and has a Stanley Steamer Vanderbilt that he drives around quite a bit.

did you ever see a video of when the battery catches on fire today's electric cars .it's almost impossible to put them out can you imagine the fire department here trying to put out an electric car fire

While those EV battery fires make headlines due to the difficulty of suppression, note that EV fires compared to ICE fires tell a different story.

According to the NTSB (National Transportation Safety Board) statistically speaking there are 25 fires per 100,000 vehicles for EV’s and 1530 fires per 100,000 for ICE vehicles.

Rumor has it that BYD will be looking to open its first dealership in the DR……sometime in 2025.
