Actually I've never heard an American says any such thing about the DR. Certain areas of the the DR are like that, they are almost, not quite though, as bad as many American inner cities or other slums. Every year my wife takes her teachers and their families to a resort for a weekend, usually around 50-60 people in total. Not once has anyone suggested that she take them to Sosua, and most of these are people who like to dance and party. Sosua doesn't have an appeal to a great deal of Dominicans although I'm not sure of the reasons.

The power stays on for an uninterrupted 24/7 (as long as you pay the electric bills) in "American inner cities or other slums" and you can drink water right out of the tap 24/7 without dying a crappy death. Hell you can even flush the toilet paper (remember that?) after wiping your butt and not have it laying in the trash can for all to enjoy.

I could fill the page with the differences but I guess there's no point, is there? This type of misinformed commentary is just as bad as the Americans (and there are quite a few of these geniuses) who refer the Dominican Republic as a "Nation of Whores". I can't believe what comes out of people's minds sometimes.

Sosua has no appeal to me either but there are those who love it the way it was before the crackdown and I can empathize with them but if the Mayor thinks it's her mandate to change it, for whatever reason then that's the way it's going to be.

Think what's happening in Sosua is radical? Check out what's going on in Rio right now with their clean up effort. It makes this Sosua thing laughable by comparison.

It all depends on your level of tolerance. Electricity problem can be solved with an inverter or generator, two relatively cheap and easy fixes. The water in most North American cities may be safe to drink but it certainly isn't fit to drink in terms of taste and is filled with every dangerous cancer causing agent known to mankind. Tiolet paper, whoopdeedo, that's a major problem, not. You can build your place so you can flush it down without difficulty.

An inverter or generator? I'm sure all the poorest Dominicans have them :ermm:

Free trumps "cheap and easy" every time.

Speaking of "cheap and easy" a Brita filter costs $15 in the States.

Toilet paper is only a "major problem" when it's got poo on it. Especially someone else's.

I'm also sure that the poorest of Dominicans are also "building their places" so they can "flush without difficulty".

Try to justify comparing poverty in the Dominican Republic to poverty in "America's inner cities and other slums" all you want.

There's is no comparison.

You are right, there is a desperation in the poverty you see in America that you never see in the DR. He was talking about the reasons he would never buy in the DR, not about how the poor lived.

Yeah. 40-50 years ago many more people in the US were "extremely poor" by today's standards (no telephone, out house, limited electrical service, well/ spring water, especially in rural areas). Today's moral poverty makes those the "good old days" by comparison in spite of greater material availability.

In many ways I liken today's D.R. to the U.S. of that era. They have an opportunity to learn from our mistakes. This "new image" campaign could possibly be a sign of that....or it could be old fashioned greed. Time will tell.

Respond to a poster on my group about this thread

If you really want FAMILY travel you can go to Disneyland... Punta Cana, Bavaro beach and thousands of places.
In Sosua families can have a great vacation. Nice beaches, restaurants, and places to visit during day time.
I don't know of any families that will go out with kids after 11pm at night. So don't try to lower down other type of travelers that are bringing in the community a lot more money then you and all your A.I. family friends giving money to the owners of those A.I hotels which then will send that money back to their own account in their own countries.

Chicas or sankies going with gringos or gringas are bringing money into the Dominican life, money for their families, money to spend in Dominican business, money that will be used in the DR and not sent back to Europe, US or Canada.

The bar El Flow was like a typical Dominican bar, with Dominicans, good Dominican music, good cold beer at a reasonable price, good place to go to sit down outside on the sidewalk drinking quietly a cold Presidente while watching people walking around.

The new mayor as an hidden agenda. Just wait and see what happens in the future. To finish just a reminder that Sosua was booming with Dominican business, restaurants, bars and wide open Dominican fun. For me the new mayor should change her name from Ilana to Cholera, the results will be
the same, the death of Sosua. Hope you enjoy your family vacation.

Very good points in my opinion. The AI's pretty much ruined a lot of business in this area, and will continue to do so with impunity now, along of course with whatever the Mayor has in mind down the road to line some pockets.

I resemble that remark. It is how I grew up in Maine. LOL
This upbringing is what taught me how to tolerate living in the DR.

It is my understanding that it was the A1's that originally put the North Coast on the tourist map. In the late 80's or early 90's this is where travel agents sent tourists. I have friends who traveled at that time. They never heard of any other areas of the DR.
There wasn't much on the South Coast except SD with no beaches. Once the tourists started going to the North coast they liked the area and wanted more than the A1 experience hence the smaller hotels and resturants and bars built up.
Next came Boca Chica and then Juan Dolio A1's for the travel agents to send customers to. That worked out good for a while because it was close to SD. These South coast A1's took business away from the North. We all know what happened to those areas when the A1's disappeared.
Finally came the Punta Cana A1's and there goes the bulk of travelers to all other areas of the DR.
It is sad because in my opinion ALL areas of the DR may be different but worth a look see anyways.

In total agreement with you. Talked to people at Classicos today and they also have to ?close it in? This has got to be the dumbest thing anyone one could come up with. People come to Sosua for different reasons. The beach, restaurants, bars , the chicas, etc.
The people I?ve spoken to don?t like the idea of sitting in the heat behind a wall . They want to feel the breeze and see the people walking. watch the action etc. I for one, will tell my friends and children( I even have grandchildren (16+)who have no problem with any of it,) what?s happening here and I hope they don?t decide to cancel their visit this winter. ?I was going to tell all you goody-gooders to FO but I decided not to?

wait til the first fire in a closed in place happens...

will they take the blame or pass it off
if i'm an owner...you make the rules you take the blame
sometimes these high position people think they live in a fantasy world
then when reality hits...they can't handle it as well as those with less than them :)

That's true too. Having been poor helps one empathize.

How were the streets last night?

Did anyone hit the bars last night? How was it? Tonight it's our night out with the Mrs.'s for dinner and I hope a stroll down PG. Normally the wives let us walk alone up front to see if any of the pretty ones proposition us. I hope they're not disapointed. ;)

I came back into Sosua last night at about 1:30 am with some friends who had just flown in from Turks & Caicos. We went to Rumba for a few drinks and it was pretty busy. El Flow didn't even last 24 hours closed, it was open and busy. Latinos, Merengue & Classico all busy. I didn't go upstairs to Classico but the group I was with did and at breakfast this morning they said it was jammed with people, after Classico they went over to After One and it was jammed til 6:00 am. They all had a great time.

Hahaha  Funny how things work here. El Flow dried up for a day and the 'curfew' (remember that?) has gone the way of the Dodo.
