I had been getting about $6000/mo running one A/C every night. But twice I got a stupid bill asking me to pay $20k last year and $17k this year. People here were over the hill on my electricity bills as they have never seen such an high bills. I asked a guy how much is he paying and said $500/mo on his small apartment running everything 24/7. I sent a girl in my office to complain and they wouldn't budge so I end up paying $17k bill and our bill is now increased to $7000. I asked to provide what makes us so special and on which ground I would have to pay this bills. Of course no clear answer was given. At least be honest and say gringo(Chino in my case) tax.

It has gotten to the point that in certain parts of the country the cost of living is higher than in many parts of the US. The legacy of Hipo and his 56:1 peso and Leonel spending like Obama and stealing like Dillinger.

"RepDom", "YES", I do have people connected to my "Line"!!!
Me, my wife, my father-in-law, my mother-in-law,my 4 kids, and the maid!
I can never understand, how Dominicans, who spent their entire lives,"B CCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCC", Before Cris Colon, with a "Fan", cold water, and an "Outside Toilet", flushed, infrequently, with a bucket of water, now need 4 "A/C" units, hot water at all times, two refrigerators, 7 fans, 4 Big TVs, a micro wave, 5 computers, even their underwear ironed, think that a "Light Swith" has only the "ON" setting, and 4 indoor flush toilets, which they still don't FLUSH, NOW, can't survive without "All The Above"????????
"WTF"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
As my "Dear Mother" always told me, "The "Good Lord", never sends you a"Burden" you can't carry"!
She never met a Dominican!
CCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCC
I think I ned to change my "Name", to
"PPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP"
As In "PEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEENDejo""!

I got my first bill a couple of days ago and it was 3915 DOP. I was expecting it to be way higher since I've been using the a/c quite a bit (nights, from 1 to 3 pm). On the other hand, no fans, no microwave, gas powered washer/dryer, etc.

Mr CCCCCCCCCCC, everyone in the third world assumes gringos are made of money, so it's perfectly normal what you've gone through.

i never heard about a "Gringo Rate" in case of electricity.
you live in your house/appartment, you have your own elec Meter which shows how many KWHrs you consumed last month, that will be multiplied by the actual rate per KWHr and bang, you see your BIll's total to be paid.
if you consume much or little doesn't matter, you pay what you consumed, on the same kinda Meter every Dominican household also has(If legally connected of course, not talking thiefs connected to a neighbour's line).
in a house with 4-5 bedrooms and many people, running A/C's, you can reach 300-500US$ per month of a Bill without doubt, and even more if the connected appliances/specially the AC's are not of modern low consume quality but old fashioned elec eating Taiwan cheapies, withh several of such connected and running you could easily produce much higher elec Bills.

I was referring to his family. They might assume they can use up all the electricity they want because he is an American, ergo, he must be loaded. It happens a lot more often than you would think. Some of you just can't grasp the mentality of a Latin American and it's alright, I don't usually understand first world mentality all the time so it goes both ways. By the way, this doesn't mean I approve of that sort of behaviour. I guess I didn't make myself clear enough in my last post.

that sure exists, with electricity the same as with many other things like using your car and its fuel for what ever unneccessary stuf because you refuel it, or taking out of the fridge what ever quantities of drinkets and quality foodies at free will as it is all paid for by someone else.
now i understand your "GFringo Rate" comment in case of electricity, and here i agree.
but as anywhere else on the globe, it is up to the one in the house who pays the bills, to educate the "Tenants/Familymembers" to use the stuff by your/my liking.
for example kittens here leaving the house with ceiling vents and TV and Gameconsoles all on and running even nobody else is left in their room for the next hours, they come back and the Console is gone for a couple days.
leaving the house for school and the A7C stays on running in their bedroom? be assured the following night there will not be any A/C running.
they learn quick, when "explained appropriately", and that's for adults in the same way a for children around here.

Ditto to CCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCC.
I HATE YOU, TOOOOO!!!!!!
but we will not call the elec company to check your meter, we await a case of good drinkets delivered to our doorsteps no later than tomorrow noon.
860.- pesos, specially when exactly the same amount every month, sounds like a fix basic rate/minimum consumption rate with nothing over the agreed on basic consumption consumed.
if your house is connected together with other houses, like part of a small residency or such, you may have a deal to pay just that set amount and the rest is on the landlord's bill.
otherwise, you have the perfect connection, as even a high quality low consumption airconditioner alone would consume that running every day 18/24.
keep it a secret, lol

yes, sounds he has one meter for all units together and gets from each a fix sum as assistance for his elec bill, fantastic deal, never talk to him about it so he will not get the idea that he pays a well amount of your electricity bill every month, haha

here on the east we don't have the fiberoptic cable, don't get your speeds.
i have the plan with the 5MB internet, 200TVchannels, 800 minutes phone plan including USA/PR/Canada/Western Europe, that runs for around 3.600.- pesos a month with the extra TV boxes.

Ok, I have checked the invoice, it was 7793 pesos, the rest was cargo por pago atrasado.
